Job Description

Our client a private family in Montecito, CA, is seeking an experienced Horticulturalist to oversee and maintain their beautiful Mediterranean-style garden and estate grounds. The ideal candidate will possess strong horticultural expertise, leadership skills, and a passion for sustainable and aesthetic landscape design. This role requires a collaborative leader who can manage an established team and work closely with the property’s principals to ensure the landscape remains both functional and beautiful year-round.


Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the care and maintenance of a Mediterranean-style garden and estate grounds on a 29 acre property.
  • Manage and lead a team of 4, including a groundskeeper, fine gardener, arborist, and a part-time gardener.
  • Create, implement, and maintain seasonal planting schedules, irrigation plans, and garden care practices.
  • Collaborate with landscape architects, contractors, and external vendors as needed.
  • Monitor plant health, pest control, fertilization, and soil management to ensure thriving vegetation.
  • Train and mentor team members to improve skills, efficiency, and overall garden care.
  • Conduct hands-on work as required, including fine gardening, pruning, and plant care.
  • Ensure proper upkeep of garden tools, equipment, and structures.
  • Develop and manage budgets for horticulture projects and general maintenance.
  • Work flexibly to accommodate any estate needs, including occasional weekend or holiday coverage.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
  • 5–10 years of experience in horticulture or estate garden management, with a focus on Mediterranean gardens.
  • Must be able to pass an in-depth background check and provide excellent references.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing garden staff or groundskeeping teams.
  • Strong knowledge of plant health, irrigation systems, and sustainable garden practices.
  • Ability to work independently and provide creative solutions for evolving landscape needs.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in landscape design principles and garden planning.
  • Flexibility to handle last-minute requests and changing schedules.


Compensation:

Up to $150k+ DOE, benefits.


Location: Montecito, CA (West Coast candidates preferred)

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (flexibility required)
