Job Summary
We seek a skilled and detail-oriented Metallurgist or Materials Engineer to join our team at a leading machine shop and metal former specializing in aerospace components. The ideal candidate will have cold-forming experience and leverage their expertise in metallurgy to optimize material performance, ensure compliance with aerospace standards, and support the manufacturing process from material selection to final product testing.
Key Responsibilities
Process Development and Optimization:
o Collaborate with engineering and production teams to develop and optimize heat treatment, machining, forming and finishing processes for aerospace components.
o Identify and troubleshoot material and process-related issues during manufacturing.
Quality Assurance:
o Conduct failure analysis and root cause investigations on materials and components.
o Develop and implement quality control procedures related to metallurgical properties.
o Ensure compliance with industry standards such as AMS, ASTM, and NADCAP requirements.
• Technical Support:
o Provide metallurgical expertise to support production, R&D, and customer requirements.
o Prepare technical reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
Material Selection and Testing:
o Evaluate and recommend metals and alloys based on performance, durability, and aerospace requirements.
o Conduct metallurgical analysis and testing to ensure materials meet required specifications and certifications.
Continuous Improvement:
o Work with cross-functional teams to drive process improvements, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
o Stay updated on advancements in metallurgy and aerospace material technologies to bring innovation to the team.
Qualifications and Skills
Education:
o Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science or Materials Engineering. Additional years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
Experience:
o 3–5 years of experience in a metallurgical or materials engineering role, preferably in the aerospace or manufacturing industry.
Skills:
o Strong knowledge of aerospace-grade metals and alloys, including steels, stainless steels, aluminum, nickel alloys and titanium.
o Proficiency in metallurgical testing techniques (e.g., tensile testing, hardness testing, microstructural analysis).
o Familiarity with cold forming, heat treatment processes, machining practices, and surface treatments.
o Familiarity and proficiency with CAD an asset.
o Understanding of industry standards (e.g., AMS, ASTM, SAE, NADCAP, AS9100).
o Ability to read and interpret complex manufacturing drawings including GD&T.
o Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
o Effective communication and collaboration abilities.
o Knowledge of metal production (casting, forging, vacuum arc remelt, etc.) an asset.
