Mechanical Engineer, Build and Test

Oak Ridge, Tennessee


JOB TITLE & DESCRIPTION:

Standard Nuclear Inc. is seeking outstanding talent to join its team developing clean energy and space propulsion in its Pilot Fuel Manufacturing facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Build/Test Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for developing mechanical designs (CAD models) and component and test system manufacturing to support development of Standard Nuclear’s advanced systems ranging from advanced ceramic fuel and materials manufacturing and testing modules, Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP), and Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG) systems. The Build/Test Mechanical Engineer will interface with the design and manufacturing teams for the advanced nuclear systems, assist/develop CAD models for components of these systems and be responsible for manufacturing test components using in-house equipment or overseeing external contractors for manufacturing such components. This complex, multi-disciplinary work will require outside-the-box thinking and close attention to detail


LOCATION OF WORK & TRAVEL:

Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with limited travel.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using industry-standard CAD software.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and optimize mechanical components for various applications.
  • Operate and program CNC milling equipment to manufacture precision components.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot CNC processes to ensure the quality and efficiency of production.
  • Design and build test fixtures and apparatuses for evaluating mechanical components and systems.
  • Collaborate with R&D teams to develop and implement test plans for product development.
  • Conduct tests, analyze results, and provide insights for design refinement.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to ensure seamless integration of CAD/CAM designs into the manufacturing process.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, providing updates on project progress, challenges, and potential solutions.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in mechanical engineering or related field; B.S. with 3+ years of experience
  • Proven experience in CAD/CAM design, including proficiency in software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated expertise in CNC milling operations, including programming and troubleshooting
  • Hands-on experience in constructing test apparatuses and conducting tests
  • Commitment to an inclusive and collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate; proactive and independent identification, prioritization, and execution of tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and communicate technical information to teammates, leaders, high-level stakeholders, and customers


PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience maintaining CNC milling equipment
  • Experience building mockups or test apparatuses
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis tools for structural and thermal analysis
  • Experience working within a quality assurance program
  • Passion for the development of advanced nuclear power systems
  • Highly self-motivated and able to prioritize and execute tasks independently
