Job Description

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, with assets totaling approximately $1.3 billion, is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our finance team. The Assistant Controller will play a key role in overseeing financial operations, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, and supporting the Foundation's mission to foster positive community impact through strategic philanthropy. Responsibilities
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and review financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements.
  • Internal Controls: Develop and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard the Foundation's assets and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts, providing analysis and insights to support strategic decision-making.
  • Audit Coordination: Support the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Grant Management: Oversee the financial aspects of grant administration, ensuring compliance with donor requirements and timely reporting.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor finance staff, promoting a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Policy Development: Assist in the formulation and implementation of financial policies and procedures to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis and modeling to support the Foundation's investment strategies and initiatives.
Required Competencies

  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information clearly and concisely.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in accounting software and financial systems, with advanced knowledge of Excel.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in accounting or finance, with a focus on nonprofit organizations.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.
  • Strong understanding of grant management and compliance requirements.
  • Proven track record of effectively leading and mentoring a finance team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and build positive relationships.

Benefits

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan offers a robust benefits package including 20 days of vacation accrued monthly, 5 personal days, 13 holidays, 9 sick days accrued monthly, paid parental leave, and employer paid short/long-term disability. The Community Foundation also offers a pension retirement program after 1 year of service which contributes 10% of salary.
