Candidates should embrace the opportunity to report to and work with the HNBA Board of Governors and VIA Board of Directors to develop a fresh strategy for the organizations. The ED/President will be responsible for driving the success of HNBA/VIA’s mission by focusing on the following priority areas—

  • Refine the business and program services model and increase membership.
  • Expand, maintain and diversify funding sources/revenue streams to ensure the availability of necessary resources to deliver the highest quality service and support to the membership.
  • Forge and burnish alliances with other like organizations in an effort to expand policy impact and reach.

The ED/President will supervise, manage and develop a staff of four (4) employees; supervise teams of outside consultants, as needed; and help focus and/or direct the work of HNBA/VIA volunteers. Additional priorities for the ED/President include effective development, oversight and/or direct implementation of HNBA/VIA’s strategic goals, including in the areas of policy, program and membership development; community and public relations; and fiscal management

Board Governance; Mission & Strategy

  • Work collaboratively with the Boards to fulfill the joint enterprise’s missions, to include meeting deadlines that are reasonably established by the Boards for work to be performed by the ED/President.
  • Lead HNBA/VIA’s operations in a manner that supports and guides the entities’ missions.
  • Communicate effectively with the Boards and provide, in an accurate and reasonably timely manner, all information necessary for the Boards to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  • Ensure the Boards are reasonably informed regarding finances, operations, risks, compliance and other necessary matters through regular reports to the HNBA Board of Governors during regular Board meetings with additional reports to the Boards, as requested, and by providing more frequent written and/or oral reports to the HNBA Executive Committee as issues arise to ensure the Boards have a full understanding of material organizational information.
  • Promote active and broad participation by volunteer Board members in all areas of the organizations’ work. Facilitate Board leadership and other volunteer resources (e.g., recruit Board members and volunteers to assist with programs, committee work, etc.) to facilitate coordination and cooperation between staff, members of the Boards, and other volunteers.
  • Manage the annual HNBA/VIA Board officer transition; keep incoming officers focused on long-term as well as short-term interests of HNBA/VIA.
  • Understand the changes affecting the legal profession and how to position the HNBA to remain valuable to members, the public and the development of the law.
  • Participate with other HNBA and VIA leaders in developing a vision and recurring and updated strategic plan to guide the HNBA/VIA. Work with the Boards and staff to ensure mission fulfillment through programs, strategic planning and community outreach

Revenue Generation & Membership Development

  • In cooperation with HNBA/VIA Finance Director, support and contribute to fundraising efforts and to the development of new revenue streams necessary to support HNBA/VIA’s mission and achieve financial growth, including through effective management of volunteers and outside consultants assisting with grant writing, and other financial development work and strategies.

  • Promote awareness of HNBA member benefits and services through a balanced and effective strategy aimed at target audiences. Maintain and strengthen relationships with HNBA affiliates and encourage affiliate members to activate National membership.

Financial Performance

  • Develop proposed operating budgets for HNBA and VIA that reflect organizational strategic priorities.
  • Develop, implement and maintain resources and processes sufficient to promote the short- and long-term financial health, sustainability and integrity of HNBA/VIA, within reasonable control of the organization and/or staff, e.g.—
  • Monitor budgets, receipts and expenditures, and manage cash flow for HNBA and VIA; provide expenditure information to HNBA/VIA Board leadership in a reasonable timeframe upon request; timely report material developments to HNBA/VIA Board leadership; and take effective corrective action as required.
  • Work with and oversee outside consultants’ work product related to HNBA/VIA’s accounting, annual audits, and IRS Form 990 filings, maintaining high standards of transparency and compliance and taking corrective action as necessary.
