Job Description

Russell Tobin is working with a leading consumer electronics organization to support their Materials Engineering department! This role is slated to be a 1-year contract with high potential for extension/conversion. As a Composite Materials Engineer, you will lead efforts in developing and evaluating composite material formulations to meet specific cosmetic and structural performance targets. Your responsibilities will include:

Material Development & Evaluation:

  • Organize and manage incoming materials for development projects.
  • Conduct material configuration Design of Experiments (DOEs) to optimize cosmetic and structural outcomes.
  • Perform process DOEs to establish optimal thermal profiles for thermoplastic composite insert over molding.

Fabrication & Testing:

  • Manufacture laminates using composite prepregs formulated with recycled carbon fibers and other chopped fiber fillers.
  • Assess materials’ cosmetic, mechanical, and physical properties.
  • Fabricate and evaluate test panels with high-thermal conductivity reinforcements and fillers.
  • Prepare and test specimens to analyze structural and thermal performance, consolidating results for review.

Process Development:

  • Document results from material and process DOEs.
  • Develop detailed molding guidelines based on experimental findings.

Qualifications:

  • Expertise in composite materials and their processing techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with autoclave and press-molding methods for manufacturing composite components.
  • Proven ability to process both thermoset and thermoplastic composites.
  • Strong foundation in experimental design, data analysis, and the creation of detailed experimental plans.
  • Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment, including:
  • Specimen preparation (cutting, polishing)
  • Microscopy and surface profilometry
  • Mechanical testing (universal testing machines, DMA/DSC, TMA)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Materials Science or a related field required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in material and process engineering, specifically in composites.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects with cutting-edge materials and processes, contributing to the development of sustainable, high-performance composites.
