As a Composite Materials Engineer, you will lead efforts in developing and evaluating composite material formulations to meet specific cosmetic and structural performance targets. Your responsibilities will include:
Material Development & Evaluation:
- Organize and manage incoming materials for development projects.
- Conduct material configuration Design of Experiments (DOEs) to optimize cosmetic and structural outcomes.
- Perform process DOEs to establish optimal thermal profiles for thermoplastic composite insert over molding.
Fabrication & Testing:
- Manufacture laminates using composite prepregs formulated with recycled carbon fibers and other chopped fiber fillers.
- Assess materials’ cosmetic, mechanical, and physical properties.
- Fabricate and evaluate test panels with high-thermal conductivity reinforcements and fillers.
- Prepare and test specimens to analyze structural and thermal performance, consolidating results for review.
Process Development:
- Document results from material and process DOEs.
- Develop detailed molding guidelines based on experimental findings.
Qualifications:
- Expertise in composite materials and their processing techniques.
- Hands-on experience with autoclave and press-molding methods for manufacturing composite components.
- Proven ability to process both thermoset and thermoplastic composites.
- Strong foundation in experimental design, data analysis, and the creation of detailed experimental plans.
- Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment, including:
- Specimen preparation (cutting, polishing)
- Microscopy and surface profilometry
- Mechanical testing (universal testing machines, DMA/DSC, TMA)
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Materials Science or a related field required.
- A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in material and process engineering, specifically in composites.
This position offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects with cutting-edge materials and processes, contributing to the development of sustainable, high-performance composites.
