About the Company
At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business.
A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family , we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight.
Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the team:
Join the Sensors Team, where we deliver multiple modalities of sensors that are rigorously tested and validated for Torc's autonomous driving trucks. Your role will make a significant impact on the future of trucking and autonomous technology as we look to Drive the Future of Freight. We are currently seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer who is enthusiastic about thriving in a handson environment and ready to grow with the team. In this role, you will analyze and write hardware requirements, interface with automotive suppliers and stakeholders, develop and oversee implementation of test plans and procedures, and ensure overall alignment between the hardware components and the system goals.
What you’ll do:
The Senior Hardware Engineer on the Sensors team will be responsible for authoring, maintaining and analyzing technical requirements, and working across the product lifecycle to ensure stakeholder alignment and successful test/validation of each sensor.
- Develop lidar, radar, camera, inertial navigation systems (INS), and microphone components that meet functional safety, security and functional requirements.
- Maintain requirements databases using both DOORS and Jama, ensuring accuracy and traceability.
- Partner with the System team to interpret system-level requirements and decompose into detailed each sensor components requirements.
- Collaborate with automotive Tier-1 suppliers to enable efficient project execution by removing technical blockers as the projects progress.
- Ensure the quality of hardware deliveries by designing and establishing robust test plans that trace back to the component requirements. This includes lab-based testing and real-world field trials to verify sensor functionality and ensure automotive-grade performance.
- Partner with the Component Enablement software team to execute the relevant hardware component tests.
- Perform problem-solving activities during design, prototype and production, driving root cause analysis and problem resolution.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and reports related to the above.
What you’ll need to succeed:
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field and 6+ years experience OR Master’s degree in a related field and 3+ years experience.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Experience working with one or more of the following sensor modalities:
LiDAR: Model raw performance metrics such as range, resolution, point cloud density, and environmental robustness. Specialize in advanced technologies like FMCW (Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave), Time-of-Flight (ToF), and MEMS LiDAR systems.
Radar: Analyze performance parameters including range accuracy, angular resolution, velocity measurement, and robustness against interference, tailored to automotive use cases.
Cameras: Evaluate performance factors such as resolution, field of view, dynamic range, low-light sensitivity, and image quality under various environmental conditions.
INS (Inertial Navigation Systems): Model drift, bias stability, and integration with GNSS systems to optimize localization accuracy and robustness.
Microphones: Analyze audio signal processing, directional sensitivity, noise suppression, and performance under vehicle cabin and exterior noise conditions.
- Experience with Requirements Management Tools such as DOORS and Jama.
- Understanding of automotive ECUs and methodologies.
- Familiarity or experience with data buses such as CAN, PCIe, Ethernet, Automotive Ethernet, LIN, I2C.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deliverables.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to automotive electronics. • Experience with high speed signaling and signal integrity.
- Experience with standard lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and multimeters.
- Willingness and ability to work across teams, geographies and time zones.
Bonus Points!
- Automotive Tier-1 supplier experience or working in a similar environment.
- Experience designing, executing and documenting lab-based and or real-world field tests.
- Experience processing and analyzing large datasets from all sensor modalities to evaluate performance.
- Experience with ISO 26262 standards, ASPICE, autonomous vehicles, or developing sensor modality applications • Experience with processors and microcontrollers.
- Expertise in advanced technologies like FMCW (Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave), Time-of-Flight (ToF), and MEMS LiDAR systems.
- Advanced expertise with radar, INS or Microphone systems.
- Knowledge or experience in safety-critical systems and applications.
