Job Description

About Us

Atmo, Inc. is the leading AI meteorology startup. We build and operate highly accurate, fast, and detailed weather forecasting systems for governments, militaries, and companies worldwide, using deep learning neural networks.

To deliver our advanced weather forecasts, Atmo uses many computing environments, including cloud-based hyperscalers, on-premise GPU clusters, field-deployed embedded computers, and large supercomputing centers. Based in San Francisco, we work closely with the Department of Defense (DoD) and must adhere to strict compliance and security standards. Our team thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and every member plays a critical role in driving our mission forward.

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Systems Administrator to manage and maintain our IT infrastructure and data pipelines. Your job is to supervise, control, and optimize our mix of computing environments for cost, reliability, and efficiency. This role will ensure the smooth operation, security, and compliance of our systems, networks, and cloud environments, while supporting our Facilities Security Officer (FSO) in staying up to date with DoD-related compliance requirements.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in server management, network configuration, and technical support, with a keen understanding of security policies. You relish optimizing computing workloads to ensure maximum performance per dollar.

Key Responsibilities

Server and Network Management:

Install, configure, and manage numerous virtual servers in Amazon, Google, supercomputing center environments, and Atmo-controlled physical servers, as well as supporting network devices such as routers, switches, and firewalls.

Data Pipelining:

Build, run, and supervise large-scale weather data pipelines that manage terabytes to petabytes of environmental data from around the world. Ensure that the data processing operations remain online and available at Atmo’s contracted service levels.

Security and Compliance:

Implement and monitor security measures to safeguard the company’s data and systems. Regularly apply security patches, updates, and manage access controls. Ensure compliance with DoD security policies and standards, including NIST, DFARS, and other relevant regulations.

User Account Management:

Create, manage, and support user accounts and permissions, ensuring proper access rights based on business needs. Maintain the principle of least privilege to secure sensitive data.

System Monitoring and Maintenance:

Monitor system performance to identify and resolve issues quickly. Perform regular system maintenance, updates, and upgrades to ensure maximum uptime and reliability.

Backup and Recovery:

Develop and maintain robust backup systems. Ensure regular backups are performed, and establish disaster recovery protocols to minimize system downtime and data loss.

Technical Support:

Provide end-user technical support for hardware, software, and network-related issues. Troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly to ensure minimal disruption to operations.

Documentation and Reporting:

Maintain detailed records of IT systems, configurations, and incidents. Document procedures and provide management with reports as needed for system audits or troubleshooting purposes.

Compliance and Licensing:

Ensure the organization remains compliant with software licenses, data privacy, and security regulations, particularly with DoD-related requirements. Manage software licensing renewals and maintain compliance with all relevant standards.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.

Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA, Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator, CCNA) are a plus.

Experience:

Proven experience as a Systems Administrator or Network Administrator.

Hands-on experience with operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Experience with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) and networking technologies.

Familiarity with DoD security regulations, including NIST and DFARS compliance.

Technical Skills:

Strong understanding of system security, networking protocols, and troubleshooting.

Familiarity with virtualization, cloud computing, and server management.

Proficiency in firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, and security monitoring tools.

Soft Skills:

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
