Position Summary
The Surgical Technician provides aid in exposure, hemostasis and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The surgical technician performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with center policy and appropriate laws and regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Able to work in the operating room under the direction and supervision of the surgeon.
Scrubs, gowns and gloves without assistance.
Can assist members of the Surgical Team with positioning and prepping the patient.
Skillfully applies the principles of asepsis, maintains a sterile field and follows all infection control policies and procedures.
Has an excellent knowledge of surgical anatomy physiology, and operative technique and works in collaboration with the surgeon.
Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.
Utilizes appropriate techniques in collaboration with the surgeon to achieve homeostasis.
Assists surgeon with placement of drains as surgically indicated.
Appropriately handles all specimens during and after procedure.
Applies appropriate wound dressings under the direction of the surgeon.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Maintains familiarity with and abides by the Center’s policies and procedures.
Supports and participates in the Center’s quality improvement program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Reads, speaks, and understands the English language.
Possesses competence and character consistent with the Center’s mission and objectives.
Able to handle, assemble, and troubleshoot procedure instruments.
Has at least one year of surgical technician experience.
Understands medical terminology.
Familiar with the Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body.
Understands aseptic principles.
Maintains certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
Education, Experience, Licenses, and Certifications
Graduate of an approved Surgical Technician Program Certification from accredited CAAHEP or ABHES program:
1 year of Surgical Technician Scrubbing experience: required
Orthopedic experience: preferred
