Job Description
Reports directly to the ADN/ADON.
Performs all staff nurse responsibility.
Checks for absent and late employees and monitors the computerized sign-in and out sheet documentation.
- Performs initial assessment and re-assessment of patient receiving care in the clinic and assists MD with all examinations.
- Delegates staff to perform the following functional assignments such as:
- Taking vital signs
- Preparing patients for various procedures and proper consents.
- Checking code cart, intubation tray and ambu bag.
- Performance of activities of daily living.
- Makes staff assignments; give each staff member the briefing necessary for the care of patients in the assigned clinic.
- Supervises medication treatment and diagnostic procedures administered or performed by staff.
- Conducts interdisciplinary referrals or conferences as the need arises with therapist, social workers, dietitian, and physicians, and other health team members.
- Makes or refers all requests for unit needs to other allied health services.
- Initials or delegates assignments for the requisitions for ordering
of medications, surgical and stationery supplies.
- Updating of medications
- Removal of recalled or outdated drugs.
- Care of special drugs such as narcotics, (if indicated).
- Care of medication cabinets and medication refrigerator.
- Enforces staff to observe:
- Safety measures
- Infection Control practices
- Care and economy of supplies and equipment
FUNCTIONAL JOB DESCRIPTION - Head Nurse Emergency Dept. RESPONSIBILITIES (Contd) :
- Managing of time
- Privacy and confidentiality for patients
- Requests and receives reports from staff. The conditions of patients and significant occurrences observed.
- Educates and teach based on patients' diagnosis and need.
- Assists and supervises care of critically ill, code blue, fire and disaster events.
- Has knowledge of immunization and keep abreast of DOH changes.
- Is able to plant PPD and interpret results as per guidelines.
- Able to perform Point-of-Care Testing, knowledgeable of the Precision Xceed Pro machine use, maintenance and quality control.
- Is aware of fire safety/evacuation plan
- Is aware of the disaster plan.
- Is aware of hazardous waste managements program.
- Evaluates patient care problem and initiates solutions.
- Make verbal and/or written reports of problems encountered as well as outstanding occurrences on the unit to ADON/ADN.
- Conducts meeting with staff.
- Observes and follow-up on all cases of suspected child/elder abuse.
- Assigns patients to herself for active care as the need arises.
- Participates in patient discharge planning with other members of the health care team.
- Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to patients, visitors, and staff.
- Routinely, as part of nursing rounds, checks all clinical alarms as per clinic specialty, i.e., call bells, infusion pumps as per clinical area.
- Participates in team building and problem solving on their unit and hospital wide.
- Ensures staffs are educated on new and continued surgical procedures and protocols as it relates to the clinical subspecialty.
Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
