Job Description
Purpose:
Under the direction and guidance of the Operating Rom Director or designee, is responsible and accountable for the delivery of individualized nursing care to patients having surgical intervention; incorporates current clinic knowledge with established nursing practice and performs nursing interventions utilizing the nursing process.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The Staff Nurse is charged with and responsible for:
1. Collects, interprets, records and communicates pertinent data relevant to the patient's care in surgery to the appropriate health care professionals; provides accurate documentation of care and data.
2. Uses collected data to plan intraoperative care, formulate nursing diagnosis regarding the health care status and needs of the patient, revises the plan of care as needed based on continuous patient assessments and conveys the plan of care to the members of the health care team.
3. Strictly adheres to perioperative staff nurse duties and responsibilities as per established guidelines.
4. Provides direct care to patients to meet their physical and psychological needs; ensures and respects the patient's rights, privacy and dignity; recognizes emergency situations/conditions and initiates necessary emergency care/action.
5. Assists with diagnostic tests/procedures and administer medications according to policy; evaluate patient responses and make appropriate revisions in the patient's plan of care.
6. Evaluates patient responses to nursing interventions and modifies plan of care achieve desired outcome; collaborates with other disciplines to revise the care plan according to the patient's needs.
7. Promotes good working relationships; behavior reflects professional and cooperative attitude; participates in the development of departmental goals and objectives.
8. Demonstrates understanding of legal implications of nursing actions; seeks assistance from other professional resource persons to improve skills; knowledge and practice; identifies unsafe patient care practice and assumes responsibility for intervention.
9. Acts as a resource person and provides direction to other members of the health care team to ensure comprehensive and safe patient care; assists with orientation and clinical experience of new personnel.
10. Performs unit management activities in the absence of HN or as assigned; keep HN informed of unit activities/needs in his/her absence.
11. Maintain professional competence through participation in Continuing Education; attendance at annual mandatory classes; maintain BLS and current AORN, CDC and AAMI recommended practices.
12. Participates in PI, The Joint Commission and Infection Control activities.
13. Provides age appropriate care to newborn, infant, toddler, preschooler, school-age, adolescent, young adult, middle aged and geriatric patients.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Special Note:
For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).

An annual education differential if you currently possess an appropriate degree in nursing or an allied health discipline from an accredited college or university, as listed below:

  • Bachelors in allied health discipline = $900
  • Masters in allied health discipline = $1,200
  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) = $1,800
  • Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) = $2,000
  • Doctorate in Education, Nursing Practice or PhD in Nursing (DNP) = $2,500
An annual certification differential if you currently hold appropriate certifications that are nationally recognized in the discipline or area of specialization for which you are employed, as listed below:
  • Certifications in the following disciplines/areas of specialization are eligible for premium pay at $3,000:
  • Certifications in the following disciplines/areas of specialization are eligible for premium pay at $2,000:
  • All other nationally recognized certifications are eligible for regular pay at $1,878 .
An annual certification differential ranging from $1,878 up to $4,878 if you currently hold appropriate certifications that are nationally recognized in the discipline or area of specialization for which you are employed.
An annual nursing experience differential ranging from $987 up to $8,190 for up to 10 years of experience if you have outside nursing experience as a Staff Nurse.
