Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. Further, LSNYC prides itself on its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) efforts and aims to create a work environment where everyone can bring their full selves to the work.BROOKLYN LEGAL SERVICES SEEKS EMPLOYMENT ATTORNEY Project DescriptionBrooklyn Legal Services (BLS) seeks a staff attorney to join the Workers’ Rights and Benefits Unit’s (WRBU) employment and unemployment law practice.BLS, part of Legal Services NYC, provides high-quality, innovative representation to address the pressing legal needs of Brooklyn’s diverse low-income population. BLS focuses on the problems that have the greatest impact on our clients: preventing evictions, fighting wage theft and employment discrimination, securing access to tax benefits and refunds, preserving affordable housing, improving access to education, accessing and maintaining pension benefits, addressing immigrants’ rights, accessing essential public benefits, redressing abusive lending and consumer practices, promoting family stability and mitigating the effects of domestic violence, and advocating for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, people with disabilities, elders, and veterans.The WRBU brings together diverse projects focused on economic justice advocacy for workers and their communities. The WRBU helps low-income clients gain access to and retain jobs and benefits through advocacy centered on employment, income tax, pension benefits, unemployment benefits, and education law. The unit’s structure encourages collaboration among WRBU advocates across practice area lines as appropriate to address client and community needs. Our employment practice helps low-wage workers gain access to jobs, benefits, and workplace protections. We pursue affirmative litigation, policy reform, individual representation, and community education designed to strengthen enforcement of workers’ and job seekers’ rights, deter employers from taking advantage of vulnerable workers, and help low-income workers earn a living wage.ResponsibilitiesThe staff attorney will join a small, dynamic, and highly qualified staff providing creative advocacy to protect and secure workers’ rights. They will provide advice and representation to individual low-income workers facing a broad range of employment matters, including wage theft, employment discrimination, and retaliation. The staff attorney will also counsel and represent unemployed workers seeking access to unemployment insurance benefits. The attorney will conduct client interviews, represent workers in administrative hearings and appeals, and litigate in state and federal court. The position also involves systemic advocacy, often in collaboration with community partners and other advocates, including policy work and affirmative litigation addressing broader employment and unemployment issues affecting our clients and their communities. Other responsibilities may include community education and outreach regarding workers’ rights.Experience and QualificationsWe seek an attorney admitted to the New York State Bar with:A demonstrated passion for social, racial, and economic justice and a commitment to working with low-income communities, immigrant communities, and communities of color to advance equity;Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills;Ability to work effectively with clients in crisis;Strong organizational skills and ability to handle a diverse, fast-paced, and high-volume case load;Litigation experience (preferred);Employment law experience (preferred); andFluency or strong proficiency in Spanish (strongly preferred).How to ApplyApplicants should send a cover letter, resume, and two writing samples to Please write “Employment Attorney” in the subject line of the email.
