Why does the job exist?
The Academic Affairs and Policy Data Analyst at the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) will analyze and report on data to support the Department's mission and strategic goals. The role involves collecting, maintaining, and analyzing moderately complex data, creating data-driven reports, and collaborating with leadership to prioritize and interpret results. The analyst will develop standard measures, build analytical tools, and work with multidisciplinary teams to create dashboards and communicate insights to improve performance and monitor emerging trends.
How does it get done?
Duties for this position include:
- Working with HED staff to analyze the effectiveness of higher education programs & policies
- Performing careful data analysis, & consult with HED leadership for new policy development
- Running various reports to assist HED programs in data reporting
- Developing interactive dashboards that display data trends for HED
Who are the customers?
This position serves HED leadership, employees, associated agencies, local organizations and students enrolled in New Mexico Higher Education Institutions.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have:
- Ability to analyze large and complex data sets, using multiple methods and tools, to draw meaningful conclusions and present actionable insights
- Proficiency in collecting, organizing, and maintaining large datasets, ensuring accuracy and consistency
- Knowledge of data analysis software and tools (e.g., Excel, SQL, Python, Tableau, etc.) and the ability to develop dashboards and data visualizations
- Ability to present complex data in an accessible manner, tailoring communication to diverse audiences, from technical staff to leadership
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business or Public Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or other related field with five (5) years of experience directly related to position at the time of posting or related professional certification as determined by the hiring agency. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
