Job Description

Position Overview: The LASBC Homeless Legal Rights Project advocates on behalf of individuals who are homeless. The unit currently has an opening for a full-time Staff Attorney responsible for providing high-quality legal services to the homeless. This position requires representation in various areas of law, including civil and administrative legal matters such as immigration, family law, driver license reinstatement, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and other public benefit and civil matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal representation in civil and administrative matters, including immigration, family law, driver license reinstatement, SSDI benefits, SSI, and other public benefit and civil matters.
  • Handle simple family law matters, including simple divorce, child support modification, and name changes.
  • Manage cases involving I-90s, N-400s, I-30 with or without I-485s, I-821, I-765, and FOIA requests.
  • Conduct interviews with clients at various homeless shelters in Broward County.
  • Carry a full caseload, attend and participate in hearings, draft pleadings, and conduct legal research.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Active membership in the Florida State Bar.
  • Experience serving low-income individuals.
  • Demonstrable awareness and sensitivity to the needs of the populations served.
  • Willingness to be an aggressive advocate for the homeless client population.
  • Ability to work effectively with a large caseload and function professionally in a highly stressful environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including other attorneys, support staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work constructively with others.
  • Ability to speak more than one language is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel within Broward County.

Salary and Benefits: This exempt, full-time position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, ranging from $71,500 to $80,000. The salary for the successful applicant may be higher based on years of experience. LASBC provides a generous benefits package, including health, vision, dental, and life insurance (for the employee), retirement, 13 paid holidays, and generous annual and sick leave allotments starting at 15 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per year, promoting a good work-life balance.
