Gap Year Pathology Program for Students Pursuing Healthcare Graduate Degrees

Embark on a gap year with HPA’s Postgraduate Pathology Program—an outstanding opportunity for passionate individuals aspiring to pursue a medical graduate degree or healthcare postgraduate program. Our program provides learning experiences in the science of disease causes and effects through examining human tissue and the practice of laboratory medicine. As a member of the Postgraduate Pathology Program, you will collaborate closely with pathologists and laboratory professionals in collecting, processing, and diagnosing pathologic specimens.


As part of HPA’s Gap Year Pathology Program, you will have the opportunity to experience a healthcare setting and learn from pathologists and pathologists’ assistance, such as:

  •  Mentoring from pathologists and pathologists’ assistants for graduate healthcare careers
  •  Educational sessions with pathologists ranging from cancer staging, tumor types, molecular testing, and how

diseases look under the microscope

  •  Hands-on grossing sessions with pathologists’ assistants
  •  Opportunities to shadow autopsies and live surgeries
  •  Working knowledge of a diagnostic medical laboratory

The Quality Assurance (QA) Path Aide serves a key role by directly supporting the QA program at HPA. This includes managing information, coordinating communication, and analyzing case and materials data from the hospital and physician office practices. This position works directly with the QA Pathologist and QA Coordinator to help oversee the lean projects and quality initiatives for the group.

Specific duties:

  • Schedule is flexible (suggestion of 8:00 AM arrival and departing around 4:00 PM, but variable)
  • Collect, analyze, and present large amounts of data via Excel and electronic medical records (EPIC) for QA purposes and by individual pathologist request
  • Work directly with HPA QA Pathologist and QA Coordinator to assist with quality improvement and miscellaneous research projects
  • Project Work Examples: collect data for pathology subspecialties concerning diagnostic rates/outcomes, run EPIC reports to find specific data (e.g., certain diagnoses or specimens), updating internal practice resources, etc.
  • Assist pathologists with outreach and telepathology scheduling
  • Assist other pathology aides as needed


Prerequisites and required skills:

  •     4-year undergraduate degree in pre-health program with 3.0 GPA or higher and the intention of applying to medical school or other healthcare postgraduate program
  •    Proficiency with computers and technology (specifically with Microsoft Office applications), some prior experience required
  •    Organization skills and attention to detail, motivated to learn
  •    Ability to adapt and respond to problems in an efficient and creative manner
  •    Ability to multi-task efficiently during periods of high workload and stress
  •    Ability to initiate changes independently and demonstrate personal accountability
