Gap Year Pathology Program for Students Pursuing Healthcare Graduate Degrees
Embark on a gap year with HPA’s Postgraduate Pathology Program—an outstanding opportunity for passionate individuals aspiring to pursue a medical graduate degree or healthcare postgraduate program. Our program provides learning experiences in the science of disease causes and effects through examining human tissue and the practice of laboratory medicine. As a member of the Postgraduate Pathology Program, you will collaborate closely with pathologists and laboratory professionals in collecting, processing, and diagnosing pathologic specimens.
As part of HPA’s Gap Year Pathology Program, you will have the opportunity to experience a healthcare setting and learn from pathologists and pathologists’ assistance, such as:
- Mentoring from pathologists and pathologists’ assistants for graduate healthcare careers
- Educational sessions with pathologists ranging from cancer staging, tumor types, molecular testing, and how
diseases look under the microscope
- Hands-on grossing sessions with pathologists’ assistants
- Opportunities to shadow autopsies and live surgeries
- Working knowledge of a diagnostic medical laboratory

The education coordinator organizes and prepares multidisciplinary patient care-planning conferences. The materials they prepare allow healthcare professionals to discuss trends and share medical knowledge and information. As an education coordinator, you will work closely with pathologists on projects and tasks as requested while coordinating HPA’s internal medical literature and publications review.
Specific duties:
- Arrives at 8:00 AM and typically departs around 4:00 PM
- Coordinates and prepares the materials needed for disease-treatment conferences for HPA pathologists
- Collaborates with pathologists and various hospital administrators on a daily basis
- Assists with other educational projects as needed
- Coordinates HPA review of medical literature and publications
- Assists other pathology aides as needed
Prerequisites and required skills:
- 4-year undergraduate degree in pre-health program with 3.0 GPA or higher and the intention of applying to medical school or other healthcare postgraduate program
- Proficiency with computers and technology (specifically with Microsoft Office applications)
- Strong communication and administrative skills
- Ability to problem solve and manage time efficiently
- High-level of enthusiasm and client-service orientation
- Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects
- Organization skills and attention to detail

The interview will consist of a series of short interviews with pathologists and current pathology aides. A virtual interview option will be available for those who need it.
