Chief Operations Officer (COO) - MUST come from CONSTRUCTION!!
Reports to: CEO
Mission:
To drive operational excellence, innovation, and sustainable growth across the organization, aligning all functions with the company’s strategic goals, fostering a culture of ownership and performance, and helping to achieve the CEO’s vision for the company’s next phase of growth.
General Duties & Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership: Provide visionary leadership for the organization’s Operations Department, ensuring alignment with long-term goals and the company’s mission. Act as a key advisor to the CEO, helping to translate their vision into actionable, high-impact strategies that drive success across all divisions, including Civil & Aviation, Preservation & Cuts, and Underground.
Collaborative Growth: Partner closely with the CEO, CFO, and executive team to develop and implement growth strategies, particularly in key areas: 1) expanding the Traffic Control, Road Work, and Events Division, 2) growing the Underground business with federal and municipal projects, and 3) furthering the capabilities of the Lab and Research Group.
Operational Excellence: Oversee all operational functions to ensure maximum productivity, quality, and efficiency. Champion a culture of continuous improvement, fostering innovation and operational excellence across the organization.
ESOP Advocacy: Promote and enhance the value of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Help employees understand the benefits of their ownership stake, ensuring that the ESOP contributes to both operational success and employee engagement.
Cross-Functional Leadership: Provide leadership to the Director of HR and field Vice Presidents, ensuring alignment between teams and functions. Foster collaboration across the company to maximize resource utilization and achieve shared goals.
Financial Stewardship: Collaborate with the CFO to drive financial discipline, manage budgets, and monitor KPIs. Ensure that all operational activities are financially sound, supporting profitability while maintaining high-quality standards.
Growth and Business Development: Lead the identification and pursuit of new business opportunities to ensure revenue growth. Establish and nurture relationships with key stakeholders in all divisions, expanding the company’s footprint in existing and new markets.
Team Building & Development: Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of Vice Presidents and operational leaders. Develop a leadership pipeline, identifying and cultivating future leaders within the organization.
Safety & Compliance: Own the safety culture across the organization, ensuring the company’s compliance with safety regulations and driving a zero-incident mindset in all divisions.
Cultural Leadership: Ensure that the company’s values and culture are embedded across all operations. Promote inclusivity, collaboration, and high employee engagement.
Operations Playbook: Own the development, execution, and training of the organization’s Operations Playbook, ensuring that best practices are followed and that operational efficiencies are continuously optimized.
KPIs:
Mission-Critical Outcomes (Required outcomes that are non-negotiable):
Overall Client Satisfaction (NPS): Achieve a minimum of 60%, with a stretch goal of 80%.
Company-wide Net Profit: Achieve a 10% increase, with a stretch goal of 15%.
Project Completion on Schedule (Overall): Maintain at least 85% on-time delivery, with a stretch goal of 95%.
Safety Incident Rate (Overall): Maintain safety metrics below industry average, aiming for zero incidents.
Employee Engagement (Overall): Achieve industry average employee engagement, with a stretch goal of reaching the top quartile.
Revenue Growth: Achieve overall revenue growth in line with the industry average, with a stretch goal of reaching the top quartile.
