Director of Mechanical Engineering / Automotive / Richmond, CA
This position is for a fast-growing automotive startup based in Richmond, CA, and is an on-site position for someone looking to join a cutting-edge company at the forefront of their industry. We are seeking a dynamic leader to help drive the development of innovative mechanical systems for next-generation electric vehicles.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the Mechanical Engineering team to design and develop innovative mechanical systems for electric vehicles.
- Make critical engineering decisions on designs, prototypes, and manufacturing processes for EV systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Powertrain, Battery, and Software engineering, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems with the overall vehicle architecture.
- Oversee the full product lifecycle from concept and design through prototyping, validation, and mass production.
- Develop mechanical solutions to address key challenges such as weight reduction, durability, and cost optimization.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence within the engineering team.
- Ensure that mechanical designs adhere to safety, performance, and regulatory standards for automotive applications.
Experience Required:
- 10+ years professional experience in mechanical systems design and development, preferably in the automotive industry.
- Proven experience with electric vehicle systems and technology, including powertrain, chassis, or battery systems.
- Expertise in designing and developing automotive components and subsystems (e.g., suspension, body structure, thermal management, etc.).
- Strong background in full product lifecycle management, from concept through manufacturing and quality control.
- Previous leadership experience managing and scaling a team of engineers.
- Hands-on experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar) and simulation tools.
- Knowledge of automotive industry standards, including safety, reliability, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with advanced manufacturing processes and techniques in the automotive sector (e.g., die-casting, injection molding, etc.).
Qualifications:
- BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working in a startup or high-growth environment is highly preferred.
- Passion for electric vehicles and sustainable transportation.
