Job Opening :

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Seasonal Forest & Park Supervisor III.

The Seasonal Forest & Park Supervisor III is responsible for supervising a team of staff to deliver excellent visitor services and interpretive programs. The incumbent of this position assists in creating staffing schedules, training interpreters, delivering public programs, facilitating events, and compiling reports regarding visitor and interpretive services.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Supervision & Staff Management:

  • Supervise a team of Visitor Services- seasonal employees and volunteers, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
  • Ensure all staff adhere to park policies, safety guidelines, and customer service standards.
  • Develop and maintain staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage for all visitor services operations.

Visitor Engagement & Customer Service:

  • Provide exceptional customer service by answering visitor inquiries, resolving complaints, and ensuring an informative and enjoyable experience for park visitors.
  • Oversee the operation of visitor centers and educational programs, ensuring that they run smoothly and are of high quality.
  • Support staff in the development and presentation of interpretive programs, tours, and events related to the park's natural, historical, and cultural resources.
  • Deliver interpretive programs and tours, and staff events as needed.

Operational Oversight:

  • Monitor and maintain visitor facilities, including cleanliness, accessibility, and operational readiness.
  • Ensure the availability and quality of park materials, including maps, brochures, and other informational resources.
  • Oversee the coordination and logistics for special events, ranger-led programs, and community outreach activities.
  • Assist with the management of park resources, including equipment, supplies, and vehicles used for visitor services operations.

Safety & Security:

  • Ensure the safety of all visitors, staff, and volunteers, conducting routine checks and maintaining emergency protocols.
  • Support park rangers in the enforcement of park rules and regulations, including proper behavior and respect for the environment.
  • Respond to incidents or emergencies promptly and appropriately, working in coordination with other park staff and local authorities as necessary.

Administrative Support & Reporting:

  • Assist in budget tracking and procurement of supplies related to visitor services operations.
  • Prepare regular reports on visitor numbers, staff performance, and program outcomes.

Collaboration & Partnerships:

  • Work closely with park management, the National Park Service, and local organizations to support collaborative initiatives, partnerships, and joint programming.
  • Participate in meetings/debriefs with stakeholders and contribute to discussions on park improvements and visitor experience enhancements.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for improving visitor services, and make recommendations for new programs, services, and operational efficiencies.
  • Stay informed about current trends in public recreation, visitor services, and park management to implement best practices.

Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
Work varied shifts and/or irregular hours; may require standing for prolonged periods of time.
Salaries are based upon full-time/40 hours worked per week. Work schedules and days off are at the discretion of the Supervisor. This position may require working weekends and/or holidays.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of forestry, parks or recreational management and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:
I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in forestry, natural resources management or parks and/or recreation management may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
NOTE: No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
