Position Title: Director of Finance

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer

Supervision Requirements: Supervises Bookkeeper and Accounting Coordinator.

Location: San Rafael, CA

Hours: Full-time, salaried, exempt status

Salary Range: $95,004 - $122,148

BACKGROUND

The Agricultural Institute of Marin is an educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in San Rafael, California. AIM's mission is to educate, inspire, and connect communities, responsible farmers and producers as part of a healthy, Earth-friendly, equitable, local and regional food system. We envision a responsible food and farming system that is environmentally beneficial, economically viable, and socially just. AIM serves 400+ farmers, food purveyors, and artisans from 40 California counties who participate in AIM's Certified Farmers Markets in the cities of Hayward, Newark, Oakland, Point Reyes, San Rafael, and San Francisco. AIM also provides hands-on and virtual education programs to thousands of children and adults, operates a farm audit program, runs a mobile market for older adults and underserved communities, and operates CalFresh/EBT and Market Match services to create a healthier, equitable food system across the San Francisco Bay Area. AIM is engaged in state and local food policy work to make sure our actions benefit the land, the people who grow our food, and the health of all communities.

JOB SUMMARY

AIM is seeking a highly skilled Director of Finance to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the organization and ensuring that financial goals are met. The Director of Finance is a key member of the leadership team playing a critical role in supporting AIM's mission by managing budgets, financial planning, and compliance with nonprofit financial regulations. The Director of Finance will work closely with the CEO and the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors to provide strategic financial insights and ensure sustainability. The successful candidate will be a hands-on and participative manager and will lead and develop a team to support finance, business planning, and budgeting. The Director of Finance plays a critical role to enhance the financial health of the organization and build a Center for Food & Agriculture. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage the preparation, implementation, and control of the organization's annual operating budget in collaboration with the CEO, department heads, and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Coordinate and assist with ensuring the completion of the annual audit process, including liaising with external auditors. Ensure timely and accurate filing of Form 990 tax returns and other regulatory submissions.
  • Develop and implement financial strategies and plans that align with the organization's goals, objectives, and Strategic Plan.
  • Report on short- and long-range finance goals and financial forecasting to support organizational change, sustainability and impact.
  • Administer and review all financial plans and Board-approved annual budget and keep CEO, leadership team, and Finance Committee abreast of the organization's financial status. Monitor and analyze financial performance and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Analyze, prepare, and present accurate and timely financial statements and Balance Sheet to the CEO, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders. Clearly communicate monthly and quarterly financial updates.
  • Manage organizational cash flow.
  • Forecast operational revenues, expenditures, and year end balances.
  • Work with external CPA to complete monthly close cycle.
  • Track unrestricted and restricted funds in QuickBooks, including restricted grants and capital project funds, and complete financial reporting for funders and donors in close coordination with the Director of Development and Grants Manager.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain financial policies and procedures to ensure efficient financial operations, internal controls, and compliance with audits, applicable laws, and regulations.
  • Supervise and mentor the accounting team.
  • Oversee all bookkeeping, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash management activities.
  • Provide guidance on budget management and financial matters and support to co-workers in other departments within the organization.
  • As necessary, assist with the design, implementation and control of accounting software or other platforms utilized by the organization that takes in or sends out money.
  • Manage relationships with banks and other financial institutions.
  • Monitor changes in laws, regulations and technology that may affect finance operations; implement policy and procedural changes as required.


Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field. MBA or advanced degree, a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in finance and operations, especially in a non-profit. At least 2 years' experience in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting/finance regulations. Knowledge of advanced accounting principles and methods, particularly in non-profit accounting, budgeting, auditing, investments, and purchasing.
  • The ideal candidate has experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Technical report preparation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage and mentor a team.
  • Highly proficient in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel). Familiarity with other accounting and payments software, including Bill.com, Bloomerang, Square, Stripe, Clover, and Shopify, a plus.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize in an environment with competing demands.
  • High level of integrity, responsibility, and commitment to the mission of the organization.

  • This position requires the employee to work in an office environment.
  • This position requires prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • This position requires the employee to be a licensed driver with a safe driving record.
