Job Description

About the Role:

The Fleet Manager oversees the management, maintenance, and strategic utilization of a company's vehicle and equipment fleet to support pipeline construction operations. This role ensures that all vehicles and equipment are safe, compliant, and operating efficiently to meet project needs. The Fleet Manager also develops strategies to optimize costs, improve reliability, and manage inventory while adhering to company and regulatory standards. The Fleet Manager duties include, but are not limited to:


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Fleet Operations Management:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the company's fleet, including vehicles, heavy equipment, trailers, and support tools.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Coordinate equipment availability and allocation to support project timelines and field operations.
  • Track fleet utilization and recommend purchases, leases, or rentals based on operational demands.

Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Ensure that all fleet assets are maintained in optimal working conditions through routine inspections, diagnostics, and repairs.
  • Manage relationships with internal mechanics and external service providers to ensure timely and cost-effective repairs.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, service history, and repairs for audit and compliance purposes.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all fleet operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including Department of Transportation (DOT) standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and enforce adherence to company safety policies.
  • Collaborate with safety teams to address vehicle and equipment-related safety concerns.

Cost Control and Budgeting:

  • Monitor and control fleet-related costs, including fuel, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation.
  • Negotiate contracts with vendors for fuel, parts, rentals, and services to ensure cost efficiency.
  • Prepare and manage fleet budgets, tracking expenditures and identifying cost-saving opportunities.

Technology and Reporting:

  • Utilize fleet management software to track and analyze vehicle performance, maintenance schedules, and operating costs.
  • Provide regular reports to leadership on fleet utilization, condition, and financial performance.
  • Recommend and implement technology solutions, such as GPS tracking and telematics, to improve fleet efficiency.

Team Leadership:

  • Supervise a team of mechanics, drivers, and equipment coordinators, providing training and performance feedback.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement within the fleet management team.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in fleet management, preferably in construction or energy sectors.
  • Experience with heavy equipment and vehicles used in pipeline construction, such as excavators, loaders, and welding rigs.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of fleet maintenance practices, DOT regulations, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in fleet management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and communication abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

CERTIFICATIONS

Excellent organizational and follow-through skills a must.

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (a plus).
  • AEMP Certification in Fleet Management (preferred).
  • DOT Compliance Training Certification (beneficial)


Work Environment

  • Split between office and field settings, with occasional travel to job sites for inspections and coordination.
  • May require working extended hours during peak construction periods or emergencies.
