Tesla Indirect Tax Counsel is deeply ingrained in the functional areas of the business and partners heavily with leadership on critical decisions. Team members are expected not only to have the skills to analyze data and make technical determinations but must also lead cross-functional decision-making processes and communicate recommendations to leaders at all levels in the company.
We are currently looking to find the next wave of talent to drive these efforts. The role Tesla Indirect Tax Counsel will advise the business on complex state and federal indirect tax issues across the automotive and energy markets, including: nexus, characterization, taxability, refunds, policy, sourcing, accruals, controversy and audits, credits and incentives, exemptions, compliance processes, exposure remediation, emerging markets, corporate structure, cross-border and interstate commerce, intercompany transfers, government relations, technical automation, evolving legislation, procurement, novel sales, and contract review. The Tesla Indirect Tax Counsel will support Tesla's indirect tax team across all matters with a focus on complex industry taxation, cost-saving initiatives, and strategic tax planning.
Responsibilities
- Assist with indirect tax advisory matters in the United States and Canada in the areas related to tax types including state and local sales and use, excise, environmental, utility, value-added, luxury, and other transactional taxes
- Assess complex characterization and dictate compliance strategy for novel products in the industries of energy, utility, auto, software, construction, and intelligence
- Partner with key stakeholders in legal, operations, business development, finance, trade, accounting, sales, and procurement to identify and implement tax planning strategies and minimize potential tax risks
- Monitor existing and proposed tax legislation, recognize planning opportunities, and recommend initiatives to corporate leadership
- Identify and advise implementation of tax automation opportunities and process efficiency improvements, especially in procurement and the capture of any applicable use-based exemptions including research & development and environmental benefits
- Review contracts and collaborate with legal to ensure contracts capture favorable tax results
- Resolve consumer escalations with government departments including Department of Revenue and Attorney General
Requirements - Interest in complex transactional tax matters, across several different industries, at one of the most influential companies in the world
- JD Degree from an ABA accredited law school and an active member of a state bar
- 3+ years of experience with an accounting firm, law firm and/or in-house at a national corporation with a comprehensive knowledge of U.S. and Canada indirect tax concepts
- Exposure to complex tax, legal, and policy issues within the industries of energy, utility, auto, software, construction, and/or intelligence
- Ability to absorb and synthesize wide variety of laws and regulations and communicate recommendations based on risk analysis in a highly ambiguous environment
- Capacity to take ownership of projects with the capability to prioritize and manage urgent and competing interests in a fast-paced and demanding work environment
- Proficient in accounting principles, Microsoft Excel, Alteryx, and research platforms, including Thomas Reuters Checkpoint and Bloomberg Tax

Expected Compensation
- Associate Corporate Counsel - $163,400 - $245,100/annual salary
- Corporate Counsel - $178,600 - $267,900/annual salary
+ cash and stock awards + benefits for all levels
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
