Equipped to deliver both custom-designed and standard electronics packages, EPI serves a variety of applications and industries. The company has capabilities that include Glass-to-Metal Seal (GTMS) and High Temperature Cofired Ceramic (HTCC) packages in Alumina & Aluminum Nitride Systems. Today, EPI is a recognized expert in hermetic microelectronic packaging solutions for applications in Aerospace, Military, Data Transmission, Transportation, Medical, Oil & Gas, Consumer Electronics and other harsh environment applications.

Position Overview:

EPI is seeking a Process Engineer to join its Glass-to-Metal Seal (GTMS) team in Newburyport, MA, which is a powder to package facility for HTCC and produces glass-to-metal seal products with internal capabilities of sintering and electroplating.

This role will focus on developing, optimizing and sustaining glass-to-metal seal processes for microelectronic and optical packaging. The ideal candidate will have expertise in designing, developing, and manufacturing hermetic seals by bonding glass to metal components, with a focus on material selection, thermal expansion coefficient matching, and establishing precise manufacturing processes to ensure reliable performance in demanding environments like high vacuum, extreme temperatures, and corrosive chemicals. The candidate will have a strong background in fundamentals of glass, surface properties and hands-on technical skills, and a commitment to maintaining high quality standards in manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Subject matter expert with deep understanding of various glass and metal alloys suitable for glass-to-metal seals, including their thermal expansion coefficients (CTE), chemical compatibility, and electrical properties.
  • Design and develop custom glass-to-metal seals for high-power electronic components, ensuring tight hermetic seals under extreme temperature fluctuations.
  • Develop and implement new glass-to-metal sealing techniques for microelectronic packaging.
  • Establish process controls, conduct studies and research for continuous improvement for GTMS processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize seal design for compatibility with various metal housing materials.
  • Oversee the selection & procurement of raw materials and equipment required for manufacturing.
  • Implement and maintain process controls to ensure consistent quality performance in processes and products
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and customer requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to GTMS processes.
  • Apply continuous improvement methodologies to enhance process efficiency and product quality.
  • Conduct experiments and analyze data to improve process parameters and outcomes

Qualifications:

  • Minimum BS degree in Material Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering or any relevant discipline. Advanced degrees in Science and Engineering are preferred.
  • Deep understanding of various glass and metal alloys suitable for glass-to-metal seals, including their thermal expansion coefficients (CTE), chemical compatibility, and electrical properties.
  • Proficient in designing glass-to-metal seals considering geometry, stress distribution, and application requirements.
  • Working knowledge of materials used in Glass-to-Metal Seal technology and processing.
  • Knowledge of testing methods for leak detection, hermeticity, and mechanical strength of glass-to-metal seals.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities with a focus on process optimization.
  • Strong technical skills in process development, optimization, and troubleshooting
  • Highly motivated, detail oriented, and capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods, process control and Six Sigma/Lean methodologies is a plus.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Desire to work in a small/medium sized company environment.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident

Join Electronics Products as the GTMS Process Engineer and play a key role in ensuring the efficient and compliant operation of our Glass-to-Metal Seal technology. Support the GTMS technology roadmap, uphold the highest standards of safety and quality, and contribute to the company's mission of excellence and continuous improvement.
