Job Responsibilities
With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.
This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, CMTNCC-Roddey Pavilion, 2200 Harden Street, Columbia, SC 29203.
As the Physician, working under limited supervision, you will plan and direct activities of a specialized medical section within C. M. Tucker, Jr. Nursing Care Center. Provides medical treatment services for patients; performs professional duties requiring analysis of problems and planning of various interrelated medical. Provides limited services for Employee Health and the Specialty Clinic.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Performs and dictates admission history, physicals, and discharge summaries.
  • Diagnose mental and physical disorders, prepares plans and administers treatment as appropriate.
  • Determines and prescribes medication to be administered by nursing staff under his/her supervision.
  • Performs Death Reviews for all deaths in the Roddey and Stone Pavilions and provides recommendations to the Medical Director.
  • Provides services for Employee Health and the Specialty Clinic related to signing off on files up to four (4) hours a week max.
  • Provides leadership and guidance in meetings. Provides consultations to other physicians.
  • Maintains liaisons with patients' relatives. Provides information and guidance in treatment of patients.
  • Provides clinical supervision to Nurse Practitioners.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited medical school, plus completion of an internship or one (1) year of residency training.
Agency Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an approved school of medicine and three (3) years medical residency in the particular area of specialization and two (2) years' experience in medical services programs. Must be licensed by the South Carolina LLR Medical Board.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in long-term and behavioral health care.
Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
Additional Comments
The selected candidate primary responsibility is to provide medical coverage to the facility with other patient care duties to be assigned as needed by the Director of Professional Services (Medical Director). Must have a thorough knowledge of the techniques and skills used in examination, diagnosis and treatment of medical problems. Knowledge of the principles and practices of general medicine. Must have the ability to conduct physical examinations, diagnose and treat physical illness, prepare and maintain necessary paperwork and the ability to establish and maintain a satisfactory working relationship with patients and other professional employees and the general public.
