SouthCoast Health Seeks an Assistant Phlebotomy Supervisor
Job Summary:
Responsible for assisting Phlebotomy Supervisor in training and managing staff. Responsible for completing laboratory procedures as ordered by physician. Obtaining appropriate specimens to meet testing requirements determined by specific laboratory guidelines utilizing aseptic technique, as well as OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards. Knowledge of OSHA and CLIA. Travels throughout the greater Savannah area to assist in other locations.
Essential Functions:
Assists Phlebotomy Supervisor staff scheduling to ensure adequate staffing to cover business hours.
Ensures compliance with operational, clinical and Human Resources policies, procedures, regulations, and standards. Demonstrates knowledge of and supports corporate mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, and the code of ethical behavior.
Assists Phlebotomy Supervisor in overseeing and supervising daily office and laboratory operations, including proper staffing, identifying qualified candidates through selection process, orientation, scheduling, training, and supervision of staff as directed.
Trains other lab assistants on the proper lab procedures and protocols at trainee’s designated location.
Properly identifies patient and appropriate patient care instructions. Performs venipuncture, and capillary punctures on patients. Identifies and labels specimens. Conducts laboratory tests on specimen.
Knowledge of Point of Care testing using CLIA waived testing procedures.
Accurately maintains patient logs with date, patient name, lab accession number, lab test ordered, and laboratory used to perform testing.
Utilizes appropriate reference laboratory requisitions with patient demographics information, billing information, test requested and appropriate diagnosis codes.
Follows appropriate billing procedures, sample handling, and preparation as designated by reference laboratory.
Performs daily maintenance, quality control, quality assurance, and sample analysis.
Reviews and reports patient test results utilizing laboratory instrumentation and test kits.
Logs physician orders in accession log. Documents in charts in accurate and timely manner.
Ensure proper staffing levels are at designated locations, work with Supervisor
Reports to work on a regular and consistent basis.
Qualifications:
3 to 5 years experience as Phlebotomist.
1 to 2 years Supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge of safety procedures for the lab and utilize universal precautions.
Knowledge of how to use laboratory equipment properly.
Knowledge of laboratory regulatory requirements, preferred.
Skill in proper collection of specimens.
Skill in following proper lab procedures and policies.
Skill in computer lab software.
Skill in the use of tact and professionalism when dealing with patients.
Travel: Travels on a regular basis to other laboratory locations in Chatham, Bryan, and Liberty counties.
Education: High School graduate or equivalent required. Prefer Associate Degree or Vocational School program for phlebotomy from an accredited college or technical school or equivalent experience. Prefer licensure, registry, or certification, ASCP or equivalent.
