Job Summary:
Hawai'i Pacific University invites applications for an Assistant Professor to support the interdisciplinary program in Arts and Markets. The successful candidate will oversee the growth, development and administration of the Arts and Markets Degree, advise majors, develop curriculum, and teach capstone and other courses in the major. Ability to direct instrumental musical ensembles is strongly desired
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in music, arts management, or a related field OR Master's degree in music with equivalent professional and arts management experience.
  • Demonstrable record of successful college teaching
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and diversity, and ability to interact effectively with diverse cultures and ethnic groups.
  • Instrumental music ensemble teaching/directing experience.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Professional arts management experience within educational organizations, businesses, nonprofit organizations, or government agencies that deal in, represent, or interact with artists and the arts.
  • Successful track record of recruitment and fundraising
  • Administrative experience at the department or college level
  • Ability to network with community organizations and programs to develop partnerships for the benefit of students, faculty, and the university.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Other Qualifications:
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.
  • Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes a valid driver's license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's summer and winter break, if necessary.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Able to teach classes at multiple locations on Oahu.
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
Teaching (60%)
  1. Teach Courses in the Arts & Markets Program
  2. Lead Instrumental Music Ensembles as applicable
  3. Assist in the development and administration of the goals, objectives, and direction of the Arts & Markets BA and the Instrumental Music Program
  4. Perform related duties such as advising students on academic and vocational curricula, acting as advisor to student organizations, mentor students, and provide office hours for students.
  5. Teach courses, including capstones in the degree program.
University and Program Service (25%)
  • Attend all program/department, college, and university meetings.
  • Assist in the recruitment of new students
  • Develop and maintain close connections with community partners
    • Plan student activities, workshops, and retreats to promote retention
    • Plan and implement student auditions and scholarships
    • Monitor and update instrumental music websites
    • Coordinate marketing materials with the university for concerts, auditions, and other publicity.
    • Assist with co-curricular activities to include organization of, participation in, or presentation of faculty forums or workshops; advising and sponsorship of clubs and societies; participation in, organization of, providing guidance and assistance to extra-curricular or co-curricular university events such as banquets, the literary magazine, the athletic program, intercultural events, theatrical productions, guest speaker forums, or graduation ceremonies.
    • Plan and implement regular fundraising activities
    • Manage instrumental music budget
    • Oversee concert tours, local, mainland and abroad
    • Lead programmatic/collaborative efforts to create multi-faceted shows and concert productions
    • Monitor and update musical instrument/equipment inventory, and music library organization
    • Work closely with the Director of Choral Music on collaborative concerts and concert tours, fundraising, and music curriculum.
    • Colleges will further determine and articulate specific expectations for university service.
Scholarship and Professional Development (10%)
  • Engage in research or scholarly/creative projects appropriate for the field
  • Disseminate research findings through publication, conference presentations, and invited talks or in manner appropriate to creative disciplines
  • Keep abreast of new knowledge and other developments in their field.
Performs other related duties as appropriate (5%)
  • Actively participate as an effective member of a team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
