Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director Assessment and Evaluation, the Data Analyst supports the development of student experience needs assessments and trends to respond to the operational and strategic mission of Student Life and Learning (SLL). The incumbent will conduct benchmark analyses; develop reports using data derived from feedback and operational systems and collaboration with Student Life and Learning units. The Data Analyst will develop student surveys, interviews, focus groups and McGill community consultations, as well as advise Student Life and Learning on data visualization and storytelling based on relevant sources of data and information. The Data Analyst will implement reporting tools to enhance analytics capacity to gain insights on business data and to drive the operations and planning to enhance the student experience. Responsibilities include the development of the infrastructure and the reporting delivery to gain insight on the business data and to drive business operations and planning.
Primary Responsibilities:
Gather the business data and information needs to determine the best infrastructure, tools and data solutions to meet the needs defined by various customers. Develop and implement the required infrastructure. Provide recommendations and implement analytical approaches and methodologies.
Support the evidence-based decision-making process by providing robust quantitative and qualitative, and analytical information that supports student success and wellness in a holistic manner.
Using predictive analytics, provide recommendations into future trends.
Develop reports on trends and data visualization on an ad-hoc basis or as part of long-term business key performance indicators.
Conduct benchmark analyses of student life programming.
Facilitate efforts to determine best methods to collect, visualize, and report quantitative and qualitative data and metrics to support the development, advancement, and integration of analytics strategies.
Collaborate with SLL units on the development of data instruments, implementation, and governance.
Ensure required data is captured in a reliable manner.
Develop test plans and perform testing for all phases of development, including implementation of new or improved software/tools.
Document reporting solutions and tools utilization. Train users if required.
Assess, troubleshoot and resolve problems requiring specialized skills and/or technical knowledge. Provide advice regarding problem resolution. Undertake special projects.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Strong analytical skills; excellent communication skills; ability to transform data into recommendations.
Preferred candidate will have an advanced degree in social sciences, such as Educational Measurement, Psychology.
Proven ability to conduct focus groups and consultations.
Experience with analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to build narrative to contextualize results, including storytelling.
Expertise in student mental health and wellness.
Experience with qualitative data analysis.
Experience using data visualization tools an asset (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) and a Customer Relationship Management system (CRM).
Ability to work autonomously and as part of a larger team and to build strong relationships with internal and external partners.
Experience with financial/accounting concepts, human resources, and student records reporting required.
Must have strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Must be detail-oriented with a proven ability to manage, integrate, effectively communicate, update and document constantly changing information. Must be able to work independently and as a member of teams, and follow through with minimal direction.
High degree of flexibility and organization to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously, with the ability to prioritize and meet strict deadlines. Demonstrated ability to set and achieve long- and short-term goals.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills.
English, spoken and written. French, spoken and read.
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 on a scale of 0-4.
