Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, the Senior Data Analyst works with SCS units to perform in-depth analysis of complex issues, articulate alternatives, synthesize findings and make recommendations to senior administration. They leverage institutional data and market research to develop forecasting models for strategic enrolment growth, program development, as well as trends analyses and reporting. They support internal and external stakeholders, decision makers, and public communications by documenting business intelligence (BI) needs, evaluating project opportunities, and building predictive analytic tools. They work in close collaboration with the service and academic units and the Executive team, as well as act as the liaison between Subject Matter Experts and the Information Technology (IT) BI project teams, to gain consensus on the produced documents, seek innovations to develop business understanding and insight across the business and produce dashboards and lead all User Acceptance Testing activities. The Senior Data Analyst ensures that the BI system meets the current and future needs of the stakeholders at SCS and supports the University’s mission of teaching and research.
Primary Responsibilities:
Monitors and evaluates trends relevant to post-secondary education, enrolment, research and budget as part of the implementation of the School’s strategic planning.
Direct the planning and implementation of solutions that address organization-level issues and questions, using programming skills and statistical knowledge, perform modelling analysis.
Design, maintain, and produce core institutional data analytics and reports, including but not limited to enrolment, socio-economic, and financial data based on available internal data as well as external statistical data such as STATSCAN or labour data.
Participates in the preparation of reports, analyses, and statistical information.
Work with the business stakeholders from the time a business need is identified to evaluate the BI opportunity.
Responsible for eliciting detailed BI-related business requirements, including functional, non-functional, dashboards/reports, training, and performance requirements, from business stakeholders via various mediums such as interviews, surveys, user workshops, product / prototype demos and others.
Communicate and maintain relationships with the business users.
Promote the value of the BI in the School.
Educate the user’s community on information availability.
Conduct interviews to determine the business entities definitions and relations across many stakeholders (school wide).
Conceive dashboards/reports/score cards using the BI “Power User” tools (front-end).
Contribute at the maintenance of the data dictionary.
Identification of the BI data sources with the users.
Develop test scenarios and conduct functional testing to ensure programming / configuration has been done in accordance with functional specifications and business requirements.
Ensure the reports, and dashboards present timely, consistent, accurate, complete and valid information.
Manage the reporting of information quality key performance indicators.
Responsible for defining user acceptance test strategy and plan based on business requirements and support the execution of User Acceptance Tests.
Support Business Power Users and Regular Users.
Produce the user documentation.
Define training strategy and support development of training materials; support delivery of training to users.
Support the preparation of executive reports on finance and enrollment for the Dean and other internal and external senior stakeholders.
Attend senior level committees and represent the unit at internal and external meetings.
Manage professional staff.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Proficiency in statistical analysis.
Demonstrated experience with SQL and data visualization tools such as Power BI and Excel visualization.
Ability to design business requirements for a Database. Knowledge of database design principles, including normalization, indexing, and schema design.
Experience with designing and implementing data models, and understanding of Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes and tools.
Familiarity with data warehousing concepts.
Expertise in using Power Query for importing, transforming, and cleansing data from various sources.
Proficiency in the M language for writing custom queries and transformations in Power Query, and experience in integrating Power Query with Power BI for seamless data preparation and visualization.
Experience in data wrangling, cleaning, and preparation to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
Ability to translate data findings into actionable business recommendations.
Demonstrated knowledge of analyzing and documenting business requirements, functional and non-functional specifications for Business Intelligence applications.
Strong ability to present complex data insights to the public and/or lay stakeholders clearly and effectively in writing and verbally.
Experience in creating detailed reports and presentations for stakeholders.
Experience effectively managing data projects, including scope definition, timelines, and deliverables.
Ability to work independently and collaborate with various teams.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to tackle complex data-related challenges.
Experience in higher education business goals and processes is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to work on multiple initiatives and to manage deadlines.
Understanding of the need for equity, diversity and inclusiveness in data collection and production is highly valued.
Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #4 on a scale of 0-4.
