Facilities Manager required for Leading Shipbuilder/Ship Repair Company

  • Facilities Manager
  • Onsite in Alaska
  • $75,000 - $90,000 per year

A leading shipbuilding and repair company is seeking a Facilities Manager to oversee the installation, maintenance, and repair of machinery, tools, equipment, and utility systems. This role involves setting departmental goals, policies, and procedures.

The Facilities Manager will have the following responsibilities:

  • Oversee the care of company assets to maximize shareholder value, determining repair priorities and directing repairs, preventive maintenance, and equipment installations/relocations. Review high-cost assets for replacement or subcontracting.
  • Lead the Preventive Maintenance (PM) team, reviewing manning, schedules, tasks, spot checks, and providing timely feedback. Adjust the program for efficiency and improvements.
  • Support product and process improvements by reviewing new plans, discussing equipment needs and modifications with stakeholders, and coordinating activities of facilities and docking staff.
  • Identify maintenance requirements to enhance productivity, supporting production, project management, and procurement. Produce estimates and analyses as needed.
  • Ensure a safe and clean working environment for employees and visitors.
  • Manage on-site duty berthing readiness, sanitary facilities, janitorial subcontract management, solid waste management, and parking.
  • Develop budgets for the annual Facilities Business Plan, including Maintenance & Repair, Dry Docks, and Yard Services. Achieve financial objectives through project management.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Environmental/Occupational Safety and Health to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Explore new opportunities for energy/utility conservation and recycling.
  • Train employees to improve their knowledge of facility processes.
  • Design and plan improvements using CAD.
  • Administer all facilities paperwork, track, report, and execute tests and inspections, including annual compliance items such as crane certifications, backflow preventers, and fire systems.
  • Ensure the facility is fully operational with all utilities functioning properly.
  • Oversee maintenance and repairs of all rolling stock and machinery in the facility.
  • Schedule and supervise maintenance repair work and assist with the installation and servicing of building equipment.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with contractors, regulatory bodies, clients, and team members.
  • Control budgets for security operations and monitor expenses.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise security personnel.
  • Maintain security checkpoints and perform security process evaluations and inspections.
  • Monitor surveillance systems and respond to emergency situations at any time.

The ideal Facilities Manager candidate will have the following skillset:

  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor's Degree in Business or Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a shipyard or plant engineering environment within the marine industry.
  • At least 5 years of increasingly responsible managerial experience, including 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Specific experience and knowledge of shipyard operations.
  • Specific experience and knowledge of industrial equipment, cranes, and plant utilities.
  • Experience working with ship superintendents, port engineers, craft supervisors, and department managers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with all departments, employee levels, and external customers.
  • Knowledge of marine equipment, ship repair/construction techniques, sequencing of repair activities, and shipyard safety practices.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and motivate employees in a production environment.
  • Capability to develop and implement strategic plans.
  • Strong analytical skills for researching problem areas and special requests.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and customer-focused self-starter.
  • Proficient in reading and comprehending work specifications, blueprints, contracts, and technical publications.
  • Effective at handling competing priorities and deadlines, and responding to high-priority, time-sensitive projects.
  • Ability to manage constant interruptions and maintain efficiency.
  • Skilled in scheduling, directing, and organizing work within a diverse department, and coordinating with other departments.
  • Proficient in facilitating group decision-making, team building, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to react and perform in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of accounting systems, material and procurement systems, and data processing systems.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting repair specifications, blueprints, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.
  • Competent in using PC and software applications such as Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, and database programs.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and other environmental regulations.
  • Thorough understanding of shipyard production procedures, government regulations, craft jurisdictions, ship repair methods, and administrative procedures.
