Special Risk Underwriters (SRU) is one of the largest underwriting groups within the Amwins Underwriting Division. SRU is a delegated underwriting group specializing in commercial catastrophic property insurance, servicing Amwins property brokers exclusively. As the managing general agent (MGA), we are focused on returning profit to our insurance carriers through disciplined underwriting, conservative portfolio management, and strategic partnership with both international and domestic insurance carriers. Since its inception in 2008, SRU has grown to become one of the premiere E&S property MGAs with gross written premium expected to reach ~$550M by EOY 2023 coupled with a 16-year track of returning profit to its carrier partners.

The goal of our summer internship program is to expose college students to commercial property underwriting while giving students the opportunity to learn more about the excess and surplus lines insurance industry.

Summer 2025 SRU Underwriting Internship at
Amwins Birmingham , you will enhance the skills you are developing through your academic studies and gain valuable first-hand experience. This internship will last
9 weeks and will be a
full-time position.
What You Gain from an Internship at Amwins At the completion of the Internship, the candidate will have basic knowledge of the following:
- Excess & Surplus Lines insurance industry and value chain
- The different functions retail agencies, wholesale brokers, MGA/carrier, and reinsurance serve in the wholesale distribution space
- The day-to-day operations of an MGA
- Underwriter-broker and underwriter-carrier relationships in an MGA model
- How MGAs offer competitive advantages to insurance carriers
- SRU underwriting platforms, tools, and strategy of deploying capacity
- AMWINS strategy and culture that drives success in a competitive market space
Job Duties - Assist with qualification of accounts while working with underwriting teams
- Perform necessary evaluation and reporting on account characteristics
- Help Associate Underwriters with processing necessary functions for account submissions and bound policies
- Work up SRU Online submissions, assisting in the underwriting process from start to finish.
- Manage account log for SRU submissions
Qualifications for an Internship at Amwins Required:
- Enrolled at an accredited college or university
- Pursuing a Business degree or a related program
- Recommended GPA of 3.0 or above
