Position Summary: This position is responsible for operating sheet metal equipment to assist in building parts of interior and exterior of ships, and shipyard buildings at our vast, 63-acre facility.
Detailed Description: - Follows directions under intermittent supervision.
- Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference lines on material.
- Fasten seams or joints together with welds, bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, metal drive clips, or bonds to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items.
- Trim, file, grind, deburr, butt, or smooth surfaces, seams, or joints of assembled parts, using hand tools or portable power tools.
- Shape metal material over anvils, blocks, or other forms, using hand tools.
- Fabricate or alter parts using shears, hammers, punches, or drills.
- Troubleshoot problems with all equipment as it arises.
- Proper storage of equipment.
- Diagnose and solve problems of all kinds.
- May be assigned miscellaneous tasks outside craft as required.
- Attendance is an essential function of the job.

Physical Job Demands: - Occasionally take sheet of 11 gauge metal from rack to cart (team lift) by lifting up to 60lbs from one end of sheet at 19", carrying 5', and placing at 34".
- Occasionally take sheet of 16 gauge steel from rack to car by pulling 21lbs of force at 34".
- Occasionally change the die on breaks by lifting 75lbs from 36", carrying 10', and placing at 36".
- Occasionally utilize Grinder / Welder by lifting 14lbs from the floor, carrying 50', and pushing up to 20lbs of force overhead and kneeling.
- Occasionally fabricate and install ductwork by lifting 25lbs from floor, walking 50', lifting to 72" and holding for at least 30 seconds.
- Occasionally fabricate and install insulation blankets by lifting 5lbs from floor, carrying 50', holding at 72" with one hand and performing small part manipulation with the other hand.
- Utilize small tools to manipulate small parts for installation and/or repair by gripping / pinching with 10lbs of force.

Minimum Qualifications: - Minimum of 1 years' experience preferred
- Knowledge of materials and methods involved in construction
- A self-starter who can work with minimal supervision on an 8 for 8 basis
- Ability to work in inclement weather
Desired Qualifications: - 3+ years of experience preferred
- Prior shipyard experience a plus
- 5+ years of work experience as a carpenter
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
