Job Description

Washington Post Opinions is seeking a lively, curious and detail-oriented editor to join its growing Letters and Community team. The Letters team plays a key role in Post Opinions' daily print report and in The Post's interaction with readers, but this position is also an opportunity for applicants with an interest in finding creative ways to bring new voices into The Post, and to put readers in conversation with each other.

Motivations
  • You care about conversation and are excited about the idea of elevating new voices into the national conversation
  • You are enthusiastic about the value of presenting audiences with a diversity of viewpoints and perspectives.
  • You want to make passionate readers of The Washington Post feel heard and to deepen the bond between readers and the paper
  • You have a desire to find new ways for The Post to be present in readers' lives, and to help Post Opinions writers develop new strategies for interacting with their readers

Responsibilities
  • Conceiving of, editing and executing Letters to the Editor packages for the online and print editions of The Post
  • Helping manage Letters to the Editor submissions inbox, identifying letters for Free For All and the daily report and spotting trending topics
  • Working with Post Opinions' newsletter and live chat teams, as well as with The Post's comments and community product teams to find new sources for letters
  • Designing callouts soliciting readers' opinions on a focused topic and curating and editing the responses
  • Assisting with the editing and production of the weekly Free For All page
  • Depending on the interests of the successful candidate, this position may also involve working with community organizations, teaching letter-writing workshops and engaging with student groups

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with and enthusiasm for The Post's Letters to the Editor, including the Free For All section
  • Experience in community journalism or working on writing with non-professional writers
  • A willingness to experiment and a desire to be part of a small, highly collaborative team
  • Intense attention to detail and strong communication skills, both inside and outside of the news room
  • Previous work writing headlines and presentation text for print and online copy
  • Three years of copy-editing or line editing experience

This position is based in our Washington newsroom, and may require some occasional weekend availability. We are curious to hear from applicants with a strong vision of what Letters to the Editor can be.

Candidates should upload a cover letter outlining their qualifications and interest in the role addressed to Alyssa Rosenberg, along with a resume, to our jobs portal.
