Position Summary Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician, provides to individuals and groups nursing care requiring the application of basic knowledge of the biological, physical, behavioral, social and nursing sciences. Assist RN's in assessment of patients and contributes information in planning and evaluating quality patient care. Considers emotional, social as well as physical needs. Provides direct technical nursing care to patients. Informs RN of patient's symptoms, reactions, progress, and other information pertaining to patient's care. Meets all standards and requirements of LMHS universal job description.
Responsibilities - Assists Physicians, NP's, RN's in assessment of patients and contributes information in planning and evaluating quality patient care. Considers emotional, social, and physical needs.
- Provides direct technical nursing care to patients.
- Administers medications ordered by a licensed provider after having completed the 90-hour Pharmacology Course and passing the National Exam. Practices the Eight Rights of safe medication administration.
- Responds to emergency situations in a prompt, precise and professional manner.
- Maintains excellence in clinical competency and nursing skills through continuing education.
- Informs Physician, NP, or RN of patient's symptoms, reactions, progress and other information pertaining to patient's care. Documents information in the medical record (paper and electronic)
- According to policies and procedures. Maintains a clean, safe and orderly patient, visitor, and staff environment. Practices Universal Precautions.
- Enters Risk Management occurrences into Midas accordingly
- Wears appropriate attire per policies and procedures

- Calls for bed assignment and for reports
- Enters work orders in computer
- Knows how to clean dirty equipment, including EMS equipment, and knows where it is stored
- Performs appropriate duties related to the Decontamination shower
- Able to locate all LMHS/ED specific policies, procedures, and ISO business processes via the Intranet
- Knows how to operate adult and infant scales
- Knows how to perform an EKG and where the copy is placed

- Documenting appropriately and completely in the medical record
- Accurately obtain/record patient specific data.
- Insert Foley catheter aseptically.
- Collect, label, and accurately enter specimens obtained. Ensure specimens are taken to the laboratory immediately
- Lifts, transfers, transport patients safely to an inpatient bed and to and from ancillary departments.
- Accurately collect, perform and document urine pregnancy tests and quality controls associated with it.
- Accurately collect, perform, document fecal and gastric occult test and quality controls associated with it.
- Accurately collect, perform, document glucometer testing and quality controls associated with it.
- Apply restraints correctly and monitor every 15 minutes for behavioral health patients and concerns
- Performing one-to-one monitoring on all restrained, suicidal, combative and other high-risk patients when requested by RN or physician.
- Obtain vital signs correctly
- Obtain patient weights correctly
- Exchange crash carts after all codes immediately to pharmacy
- Answer the phone when needed
- Provide assistance in order to provide efficiencies in the ED and get the patient's length of stay in the ED decreased
Requirements - Read, write, and follow verbal or written instructions
- Current LPN licensure for Ohio and maintain.
- Functions within the scope of practice of nursing for a licensed practical nurse as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
- BLS certification (Mandatory)
- Completes orientation as specified to acquire the necessary familiarity with LMHS policies, nursing procedures and techniques within assigned patient care areas.
- Efficiently participates in case of emergency (code blue, fire, weather, disaster)
- Possess basic analytical ability to perform assigned tasks and gather and interpret data in situations that are not difficult or complex.
- Demonstrates ability to provide care for pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients under supervision of a licensed physician, NP and/or RN.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability to perform: phlebotomy, EKG, vital signs, medication administration by oral, med nebulizer, IM, SQ, routes for children and adults, ear lavage, monofilament, glucometer, occult blood, visual and auditory acuity, strep screen, urinalysis, urine pregnancy, specimen collection and preparation as applicable to the practice setting.
- Demonstrates ability to proficiently operate various office machines including a personal computer, office computer systems (IDX, EMR, Meditech), fax, telephone, photocopier.
- Obtain/maintain 12 lead ECG testing proficiency, especially within 5 minutes for chest pain patients
- Obtain/maintain phlebotomy skill
- Obtain/maintain glucometer skills
- Completes WebEd's prior to deadlines
- Takes initiatives to promote teamwork and a positive work environment
- Promotes a culture of safety and proactive with implementing initiatives
- Acts as a mentor and resource for new employees
