Assist surgeons during surgical procedures by anticipating surgeon needs to make sure the procedure is executed as smoothly and efficiently as possible. They prepare and organize the operating room, clean and sterilize equipment, and maintain a sterile environment.
JOB SUMMARY
The Surgical Technician 2 functions in the inter operative phase of patient care to expedite surgical procedures, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. This position assists the surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation to ensure that the operating room environment is safe and that required equipment is available and functioning properly.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preparation for Surgery:
- Set up the operating room by assembling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Ensure all necessary instruments are sterilized and in working order.
- Prepare and drape the surgical site and assist in positioning the patient.
- Assisting During Surgery:
- Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistants during procedures.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide appropriate instruments and materials.
- Maintain a sterile field by monitoring the environment and adhering to sterile techniques.
- Post-Surgery Duties:
- Assist in the cleanup of the operating room following the procedure.
- Prepare instruments for sterilization and manage the inventory of surgical supplies.
- Document the procedure and maintain accurate records of instruments used.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with surgeons, nurses, and other medical staff to ensure smooth surgical operations.
- Communicate effectively with team members regarding patient status and any concerns.
- Ongoing Education:
- Stay updated on new surgical techniques, instruments, and technologies.
- Participate in training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
Qualifications: - Education:
- Completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
- Certification from a recognized body (e.g., National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).
- Skills:
- Strong understanding of surgical procedures, anatomy, and medical terminology.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Proficient in maintaining sterile techniques and understanding infection control protocols.
- Experience:
- Previous experience in a surgical setting is required.
- Familiarity with surgical instruments and equipment is beneficial.
Working Conditions: - Work primarily in operating rooms or surgical suites.
- May require standing for long periods and assisting with physically demanding tasks.
- Exposure to potential hazards, including exposure to blood and other bodily fluids.
