PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.   Evaluates the patient’s functional abilities/disabilities, range of motion and muscle testing through assessment and testing procedures.  Establishes the patient’s subjective, objective and functional baseline measurement to be used throughout treatment as a gauge of progress and physical improvement.

2.   Establishes treatment plans which specify treatment goals and the treatment modalities that will assist the patient to regain function, increase strength and decrease pain. Modifies treatment plans as the patient’s condition changes in accordance with patient’s evaluation.

3.   Performs physical, electrical, mechanical and heat treatments including facilitation, strengthening and mobilization exercises, gait training, prosthetic training, massage, cervical and pelvic traction, ultrasound, hot pack application, Jobst RX, transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation, biofeedback whirlpool; pulsed lavage, iontophoresis and biofeedback. Trains the patient with DL/adaptive equipment and in the appropriate home exercise program.

4.   Discusses treatment plans and patient progress with the physician. Consults with the Case Manager, social services, health agencies and the patient’s families regarding discharge planning including the regimen of home treatment, the patient’s physical level of independence and level of nursing care needed as necessary.

5.   Instructs and trains the patient/family, or other responsible person, in home exercises and functional mobility. Participates in community education programs. Provides community based educational lectures/programming.

6.   Documents the patient’s treatment and progress in the patient’s chart (or outpatient records) indicating the condition in relation to their established medical goals and home exercise programs. Completes Medicare records and progress notes.

7.   Schedules patients and arranges for transport services while noting special equipment or handling where indicated. Indicates patient treatments on the billing tickets.

8.   Assumes professional accountability for their own educational needs and remains current with developments in the physical therapy field and incorporates the approved developments or research findings in treatment and continues to evaluate outcomes.

9.   Assists in the training of new staff as assigned in coordination with their supervisor.

10.  Supervises treatments provided by paraprofessional staff and students. Reviews treatment plans and the patient’s progress with fellow treatment team members. Instructs ancillary personnel in the proper technique/treatment.

11.  Identifies issues which impede meeting solutions to problems.

12.  Recognizes and identifies the department’s educational needs and assists in or develops and presents continuing educational programs to educate other therapists in general physical therapy/acute care within a group or on an individual basis. Acts as a consultant to staff for technical and patient management problems. Keeps the department aware of developments, new techniques and equipment in general physical therapy/acute care.

13.  Participates in departmental quality assurance studies and assists in the computation and reporting in area of general physical therapy/acute care; implements the findings of Quality Assurance studies into clinical practice.

14.  Maintains productivity according to department standards.

15.  Assists in establishing or upgrading current department programs as indicated by the change in standards of practice, new research results or community/patient need.

16.  Assists the supervisor in the evaluation of subordinate staff members working in the area of practice.

17.  Complies with skills, competencies and educational requirements related to the job and the department.

18.  Evaluates environmental safety and provides an environment that is safe based on the age and developmental status of the patient for both pediatric and adult populations served to maintain compliance with National Patient Safety Goals.

19.  Facilitates patient/family participation in self care based on the age and developmental status of the patient for both pediatric and adult populations.

20.  Demonstrates appropriate psychosocial interventions based on the age and developmental status of the patient for both pediatric and adult populations.

21.  Assists in Quality Improvement monitoring and analysis.

22.  Meets the department productivity measures.

23.  Conforms to the established Standards of Behavior.

24.  Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

1.      Current Illinois state licensure as a Physical Therapist.

2.      A minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of experience as a Physical Therapist.

3.     CPR certification

4.      A Bachelor’s Degree or certificate in Physical Therapy from an American Physical Therapy Association accredited school which would provide an understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology and physics necessary to assess a patient’s condition and develop treatment plans and goals.  Master’s Degree preferred.

5.      Prior experience supervising students.

6.  People relation skills to be flexible and adaptable in their approach to patients and staff and unusual situations.  Capable of decisions in emergency situations.  Mentally alert to prevent errors in their own work.  Organizes times efficiently.

7.     The interpersonal skills necessary to educate personnel in the areas of specialization and to interact with various levels of hospital personnel.

8.     The analytical ability required to evaluate the patient’s progress and response to treatment and to plan and adjust treatment plans and to identify educational needs and develop educational programs.

9.      The ability to effectively and accurately operate all department equipment related to occupational therapy treatments.

10.  Successfully demonstrates leadership abilities including clinic coverage, program development, quality assurance and department/hospital projects.
