Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of equipment shop activities related to the diagnosing and repairing of mechanical problems in motorized and specialty construction equipment. Performs vehicle preventative maintenance service levels on all gasoline and diesel engines and/or powered equipment for all Key Series assigned to unit. Routinely checks fuel, water, and lubricating oil and grease levels of equipment to ensure that all engines and equipment are properly serviced and maintained. Conducts safety inspection on vehicles and equipment. Answers service calls in the field as necessary.
Performs maintenance and repairs on small engines such as lawn mowers, chain saws, pole saws, edgers, string trimmers, etc. Sharpens chains for chain saws and pole saws. Maintains a safe and clean shop work environment, and ensures all work is done within OSHA and DHEC compliance. Assists other mechanics in the diagnosis, repair, or replacement of parts, as necessary, to maintain all automotive gasoline and diesel engines and/or powered equipment, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, cylinder heads, valves, timing belts, cooling systems, wiring repairs, brake jobs, and tune ups when required on vehicles.
Assists in both electric and gas welding, and shop fabrications, as needed, for repairs on various equipment, and for making modifications to equipment to improve the production of utilizations. Uses computerized test equipment to diagnose, repair, or replace parts, as necessary, on gasoline and diesel vehicles. Operates and performs testing with new generation start tester and monitor testing equipment in order to diagnose problems with various on-board computer systems.
Repairs vehicles during service calls that require repair before movement and assists in shop operations during after-hour emergencies and inclement weather operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Six (6) months of work experience that is directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
