Title: Lead Java API Developer

Location: Reston, VA 20191

Duration: 6 Months Contract to hire


Candidates must reside in Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, or West Virginia.

• W2 Contract-to-Hire, 6 Months

• This position is primarily remote. With that said, candidates must reside in Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, or West Virginia.


Overview & Responsibilities

• The Lead Java Developer will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise-level web services in a cutting-edge health insurance environment. As a key member of the technology team, this individual will spearhead the creation of web services using GraphQL to enable efficient and scalable access to data stored on the MongoDB platform.

• The role demands hands-on expertise in API development and a strong understanding of enterprise-level data integration. Initially focused on development, this position will evolve to include mentorship and collaboration across functional teams. Working closely with stakeholders, the Lead Java Developer will ensure timely delivery of high-quality services aligned with business needs.


Key responsibilities include:

• Lead the development of robust, scalable APIs using GraphQL for enterprise-level web services.

• Architect and implement solutions to migrate data access services from Cloudera (HBASE and SOLR) to MongoDB.

• Collaborate with downstream application stakeholders to define requirements, scope, and delivery schedules.

• Oversee and manage the onboarding of web services to API management platforms such as IBM API Connect, Apigee, or MuleSoft Anypoint.

• Act as a key contributor to the MongoDB adoption strategy by building applications on top of MongoDB and accessing data using MongoDB query language.

• Advocate and implement best practices in API design, coding, and security.

• Support the migration of services to the AWS ecosystem in alignment with the organization’s cloud-first strategy.

• Work within Agile teams to deliver iterative solutions and drive continuous improvement in processes and tools.

• Mentor junior developers and provide guidance on technical challenges and career development.

• Partner with DevOps teams to enhance CI/CD pipelines for seamless integration and deployment.

• Stay updated on emerging technologies and recommend innovative solutions to enhance system performance and scalability.


Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as a Lead Java Developer with a strong focus on API development and GraphQL.

• Hands-on expertise in MongoDB, including building applications and accessing data using MongoDB query language.

• Experience in API management platforms such as IBM API Connect, Apigee, MuleSoft Anypoint, or similar tools.

• Strong understanding of web services architecture, integration, and lifecycle management.

• Ability to collaborate with stakeholders to define requirements and manage delivery timelines.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex technical environments.


Preferred Skills & Experience

• Cloud experience, with familiarity in developing applications for deployment on AWS.

• Proficient in CI/CD tools and practices to ensure efficient development workflows.

• Solid understanding of Agile methodologies and experience working in an Agile environment.

• Experience in migrating systems from Cloudera (HBASE and SOLR) to MongoDB.

• Deep understanding of NoSQL databases and their use in large-scale enterprise applications.

• Exposure to AWS services such as Amazon API Gateway, Lambda, and DynamoDB.

• Background in mentorship and team leadership, with the ability to build technical teams.

• Knowledge of security best practices in API development and deployment.

• Certification in MongoDB, AWS, or API management platforms.
