Job Description

Superintendent is a construction professional responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems installation on a construction project, including coordinating subcontractors, ensuring quality control, maintaining project schedules, and guaranteeing site safety related to MEP work, while reporting to the project manager.


Key responsibilities of a MEP Superintendent:

  • Field Supervision:
  • Directly supervise MEP subcontractors, craft workers, and foremen on site, ensuring compliance with project plans, specifications, and safety regulations.
  • Quality Control:
  • Conduct regular inspections to verify the quality of MEP installations, including materials, workmanship, and adherence to building codes.
  • Schedule Management:
  • Develop and monitor detailed MEP work schedules, identify potential delays, and implement corrective actions to maintain project timelines.
  • Coordination:
  • Coordinate activities between different MEP trades (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) to ensure proper integration and avoid conflicts.
  • Submittal Review:
  • Review and approve MEP submittals from subcontractors, including shop drawings, material specifications, and equipment data sheets.
  • Material Management:
  • Track and manage the delivery and storage of MEP materials on site, ensuring timely availability for installation.
  • Cost Control:
  • Monitor MEP project costs, identify cost variances, and work with the project manager to implement cost-saving measures.
  • Safety Oversight:
  • Enforce safety protocols on the MEP worksite, conducting safety meetings and addressing potential hazards.
  • Communication:
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with project managers, subcontractors, engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Documentation:
  • Prepare and maintain detailed project documentation including daily reports, progress logs, and inspection reports.
  • Required skills and qualifications for a MEP Superintendent:

    • Extensive knowledge of MEP systems, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing codes and standards
    • Strong understanding of construction drawings and specifications
    • Proven experience in managing MEP subcontractors and coordinating their work
    • Excellent leadership and communication skills to effectively manage teams
    • Ability to analyze project schedules and identify potential issues
    • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to address field challenges
    • Proficiency in construction software for project management and documentation
    • A relevant construction management degree or equivalent experience
