TOOLING ENGINEER

SUMMARY:

Responsible to assist in the design, acquisition and maintenance of all corporate dies, jigs, fixtures,

gauges and additional tools used in manufacturing. Also responsible for updating and maintaining

the accuracy of CAD drawing file and file storage on the corporate server.

Reporting structure:

In the USA, this position reports to the Corporate Tooling Manager.

In Mexico, this position reports to the Tooling Manager – Mexico.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. The Tooling Engineer will be responsible for assisting and/or performing the function of the Tooling

CAD Designer. Those functions include, but are not limited, to the following:

A) Develop tool design concepts in conjunction with input from other pertinent departments.

B) Make necessary CAD drawings consisting of assemblies, details, and bills of material.

C) Check design work to verify accuracy and compatibility to similar tools/processes within

corporation.

D) Develop layouts to establish correct dimensions of parts, machinery, tooling, or related

production equipment.

E) Work with Tool Room personnel to physically measure and document tooling components

when necessary.

F) Assemble and organize tooling drawings (CAD files) to assist in obtaining tooling

quotations from vendors.

G) Assist all Company facilities and/or vendors with dimensional information as needed.

H) Assist with implementation of corporate tooling projects in all plants.

I) Assist with tooling related training in all plants.

J) Assist in trouble shooting tooling related problems.

K) Assist in converting Auto CAD files to SolidWorks 3-D.

2. The Tooling Engineer will also be responsible to assist and/or perform functions of the Tooling

Manager when needed. Those functions include, but not limited, to the following:

A) Assist in maintaining the tooling documentation procedure, including the Tooling Change

Orders logbook, tool asset log and drawing series logbooks.

B) Responsible for CAD data entry into the appropriate location on the corporate server.

C) Assist with procurement of tooling from venders or Company tool rooms. Verify use or

materials, expected level of workmanship, and monitor status of work completed to achieve

established delivery dates.

D) Assist in inter-plant training of standardized tool/die servicing techniques or procedures.

E) Develop ideas to improve production tooling that will increase efficiencies.

F) Assist with proper orientation and set up of new tooling in all plants. Also, follow up and

document any required modifications.

G) Share responsibility for corporate tooling audit programs and make suggestions to expand

or improve.

H) Serve as temporary Tool Room Supervisor in any Company facility as needed.

I) Share responsibility with Tooling Manager for new tooling buy off from vendors when

necessary.

J) Assist with capability studies or other quality related activities regarding implementation of

new tools.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

TRAVEL:

Extended or overnight travel to other Company facilities, tooling vendors or technical seminars.

Local travel is also required.

CONFIDENTIALITY:

Employee has access to die drawings, product cost and process data. Employee has sufficient

knowledge to duplicate Company tooling and processes.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Over 5 years tool and die maker experience or completion of a bona-fide apprenticeship program.

Some supervisor experience required and experience with managing tooling supplies.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Associate’s degree in a related discipline is preferred.

OTHER:

Very good communication skills required (verbal and written).

Self-starter and ability to function with minimal supervision. Must be a team player.

Strong mechanical and conceptual aptitudes are required.

In Mexico: fluency in English and Spanish is required.
