About the Role:

As the Director of Finance at Minnesota Freedom Fund (MFF), you’ll be a crucial player in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of our organization. Working closely with our Executive Director, you’ll oversee all aspects of financial management, from accounting and budgeting to financial planning and reporting. You’ll collaborate with the Board Finance Committee and Board Treasurer to provide essential financial updates, helping guide the organization’s strategic financial decisions.

 

Who is MFF?

The Minnesota Freedom Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for social justice and supporting individuals who are unable to afford bail or immigration bonds. Our focus lies in addressing issues related to pre-trial justice and immigration detention, aiming to combat discrimination and oppression within the criminal justice system. By providing financial assistance to those in need, the organization works towards creating a society that values the freedom and rights of all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status or identity.

What You’ll Do:

 

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with the Directors to focus on the organization’s financial priorities, particularly those impacting resources, policies, and long-term growth.

 

Financial Oversight

  • Oversee the overall financial health of the organization, ensuring we meet our financial goals.
  • Create, lead, and manage the organization’s accounting processes, making sure everything is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Develop and present the annual budget for board approval, working closely with the Executive Director, Board Treasurer, and department heads.
  • Continuously update long-term financial projections to anticipate challenges.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for the Board and Treasurer to ensure the proper management of our investment portfolio. (Let’s discuss)
  • Work with the Development department to prepare the annual revenue reconciliation for the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee our bookkeeping system, ensuring accurate record-keeping for deposits, invoices, bank reconciliations, and expenses.

 

Accounting & Compliance

  • Manage the annual audit process and serve as the primary contact for independent auditors.
  • Collaborate with external accountants to prepare and file IRS Form 990 annually.
  • Regularly review and update the Accounting Procedures Manual to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.

 Desired Experience/Qualifications:

·        Proven Experience in Financial Management: At least 7 years of experience in finance or accounting. Nonprofit experience is a plus but not required.

·        Experience with Budgeting and Financial Forecasting: You’ll have experience in creating, managing, and reporting on budgets, with the ability to analyze and plan long-term financial forecasting.

·        Familiarity with Financial Reporting and Compliance: Experience preparing financial statements, managing audits, and ensuring compliance with IRS regulations.

  • Experience with Financial Software and Systems: You’ll be comfortable using financial management software (e.g., QuickBooks, Bill.com, or similar) to streamline processes and ensure accuracy.
  • Understanding of Fundraising and Revenue Reporting: You’ll collaborate with the development department to track and report on donations, grants, and fundraising revenue.
  • Knowledge of Investment Management: You should have experience overseeing or managing investment portfolios, particularly in the nonprofit sector.
  • Understanding of Accounting Practices and Tax Laws: A solid grasp of GAAP and relevant tax laws is essential, especially in managing nonprofit-specific regulations.
  • Education and Certification: A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field is required, or equivalent experience in financial management may be considered in lieu of a degree. Professional certifications such as CPA, CMA, or an MBA are highly preferred.


Salary and Benefits:

The Director of Finance position is a full-time position that is expected to work 40 hours per week. This is a non-union position with a salary range of $100,000 - $115,000.  

We understand how vital our work is and at the same time understand the toll engaged activism can take. Our goal is to retain staff, and we believe that having a robust benefits offering is vital in meeting that goal. Our benefits include three weeks paid vacation in addition to 11 office holidays; plus earned sick and safe time, retirement benefits, medical, dental, life, short-term disability, and long-term disability insurance is currently provided.
