Job Summary

Perform all aspects of direct respiratory care according to physician's orders and/or approved protocols. Consult with physicians on the effectiveness of therapy and make appropriate recommendations. Provide appropriate ventilator support and maintain and monitor other cardiopulmonary life support equipment. Maintain and properly utilize respiratory care equipment.

Essential Functions
* Demonstrate knowledge in various modes and methods of oxygen delivery and the equipment needed for each.
* Conduct prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate oxygenation.
* Administer therapeutic procedures, understanding their purpose, benefits, and possible effects.
* Perform diagnostic procedures as outlined in policy.
* Initiate, monitor, and maintain mechanical and non-invasive ventilators, understanding critical care duties and effects.
* Independently evaluate current therapies using appropriate judgment and protocols, making proper recommendations concerning plans of care and patient education needs.
* Document therapy and results as required by hospital, department, and regulatory agencies.
* Communicate information to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
* Initiate, conduct, and modify respiratory care techniques in an emergency setting.
* Perform and evaluate blood sampling analysis with a thorough understanding of the values, importance, and treatment of abnormal results.
* Work independently in all patient care areas and assist co-workers with patient care whenever possible.
* Follow departmental safety guidelines.
* Complete all regulatory requirements.
* Complete annual proficiency evaluation of respiratory care equipment and procedures.
* Be proficient in electronic medical records and their interface with the Respiratory Care Department.

* Ability to lift materials weighing 20-50 pounds.
* Ability to move patients of all age groups.
* Adequate hearing and eyesight necessary.
* Exposure to a working environment that may include odors, low lighting, and crowded conditions.

Education and Certifications
* Graduate of an AMA-approved school of Respiratory Care or Associate's Degree in Health Science required. Bachelor's Degree preferred.
* RRT (NBRC) required.
* State License as Respiratory Care Practitioner required (must be licensed in the state of practice).
* BLS, ACLS, PALS (AHA or ARC) required.
* NRP required.
