Position Summary
The Department of Art is seeking a visiting assistantprofessor in art education for the 2025-2026 school year whose scholarship isrooted in art education teacher preparation, new media, and contemporaryinquiry-driven pedagogies. The idealcandidate should be able to teach art education courses for Prek-12th grade art teacher preparation and new media art education as well as mentoringgraduate students on capstone research projects. The visiting art educationassistant professor will be part of the art education program, which is an areawithin the Department of Art.
We are seeking candidates who are passionate about teaching preserviceart education students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Theteaching load is three courses per semester (3/3) for the 2025-2026 school year.

The University of New Mexico's Art Education program is theonly visual art teacher Prek-12th grade licensures program in NewMexico. The program offers BA and MAdegrees with or without a New Mexico art teaching license and is grounded ininterweaving theory and practice through experiential learning, artmaking asinquiry, and cultivating interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches. Thefoundation of the program is based on the understanding that art making is aform of inquiry-a way to research, study, and comprehend diverse learners'psychological, cultural, and social phenomena. Through coursework, fieldexperiences, and seminars, students cultivate a personal art pedagogy forworking with a broad range of learners, from young children through adults, withindiverse art education contexts. Students learn approaches for teachingtechnical skills through diverse materials and processes, facilitatingconceptual and critical thinking, and developing learners' aesthetic awareness.The art education program participates in the innovative Albuquerque TeacherResidency Partnership (ATRP), to improve the preparation and retention ofeffective, diverse teachers for high-need schools through a year longapprenticeship.
The University of New Mexico's Department of Art is part ofthe College of Fine Arts, whose internationally recognized programs, faculty,and staff provide a comprehensive education in both the visual and theperforming arts. The Department of Art offers B.A., M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D.degrees.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: - M.F.A. with 3-5 years of Prek-12th grade visualarts teaching experience
- ABD, Ed.D or PhD with 3-5 years of Prek-12th grade visual arts teaching experience
Preferred Qualifications: - Two years cumulative university-level experience asinstructor of record.
- Active exhibition and/or scholarly publishing record.
- Conversant in contemporary issues of critical theory, designand aesthetics education.
- Expertise and ability to teach art teacher preparation andsupervision, and new media (technology, digital arts, etc).
- Ability to provide mentorship to graduate students.
- Demonstrated interest in contributing to a contemporaryinterdisciplinary setting in an atmosphere of close faculty-student mentoring.
- Excellent communication skills and an interest incollaboration.
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion,and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
