Title: Director of Engineering

Location: South San Francisco (Hybrid, 3 days onsite - near Montgomery BART station)

Our client is a Series B startup in the genomics space, revolutionizing genetic testing through cutting-edge technology. We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead and scale their engineering team, driving innovation in biotech software solutions .

What You’ll Do

• Lead, mentor, and scale a team of backend and full-stack engineers, fostering a high-performing, collaborative environment.
• Oversee the design, development, and deployment of scalable backend systems, ensuring robustness and security in genetic data processing .
• Maintain hands-on technical contributions, writing high-quality Python code and guiding best practices in Django, REST APIs, and distributed systems .
• Architect and optimize cloud infrastructure using AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, and Docker to ensure efficiency and scalability.
• Drive the CI/CD pipeline strategy, improving deployment workflows and automating key processes.
• Collaborate with data scientists, bioinformaticians, and product teams to develop innovative solutions for genetic testing and analysis .
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory frameworks , implementing secure data handling practices .
• Maintain a working knowledge of frontend technologies (React, Vue) to effectively guide full-stack development efforts.

What We’re Looking For

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering , with at least 2+ years in a Director-level role within biotech, genomics, or healthcare .
• Strong background in Python, Django, and RESTful API development .
• Experience leading engineering teams in a high-growth startup or scaling environment .
• Deep expertise in cloud-based architectures (AWS, Linux, Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker) .
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Knowledge of frontend technologies (React, Vue) to provide technical leadership across the stack.
• Genomics or genetic testing experience strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of data security, compliance, and privacy regulations (HIPAA).
