Works within the Integrative Ecology and Economics Group to support the day-to-day management and maintenance of the Team’s geo-spatial data. Works in collaboration with scientific colleagues and other stakeholders to develop, test and implement new knowledge into tools and applications.
Investigate and incorporate biotic and abiotic data and models into information systems applications.
Perform data management functions in support of the biotic and abiotic data.
Provide programming support for Group’s Applications and Models.
Perform spatial data management and data integration functions that support an integrated systems approach to Sustainable Forest Management data and systems.
As necessary, support GLFC Integrated Systems reporting commitments and other activities.

The Great Lakes Forestry Centre is an internationally recognized forest science centre specializing in forest insect pest management, forest ecology, productivity, and impact of forest disturbances. A diverse group of scientific researchers, policy analysts, and administrative staff work to maintain a creative and stimulating work environment. The research centre is located in the Great Lakes region with easy access to many outdoor activities during all seasons.

Intent of the process The intent of this process is to staff 1 term position. Additionally, a pool of candidates may be established through this process to fill the same or similar positions with various tenures (term or indeterminate) within Natural Resources Canada.

Information you must provide In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications) Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position such as computer science, earth sciences, forestry, geography, economics or mathematics.
Experience:
• EX1: Experience in preparing and analysing large datasets in a scientific environment.
• EX2: Experience in using computer programming languages for scientific modelling and simulation.
The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job) Knowledge:
• KN1: Knowledge of mathematical and statistical algorithms.
• KN2: Knowledge of at least one programming language: C++, C, Python, R or MATLAB.
Abilities:
• AB1: Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• AB2: Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Personal Suitability:
• PS1: Adaptability
• PS2: Analytical thinking

The following may be applied / assessed at a later date (may be needed for the job) Asset Qualifications:
• AQ1: Advanced Science degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of Natural or Physical Sciences, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Economics or another science relevant to the position.
• AQ2: Experience in contributing to scientific reports, papers and publications.
• AQ3: Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems including ESRI and open sources software such as QGIS.
• AQ4: Knowledge of linear programming and optimization.
• AQ5: Knowledge of forestry, ecology and wildfire science.
