Russell Tobin is seeking an EHS Manager for a global performance materials company and a leading producer of commercial silica used in the oil and gas industry and in a wide range of industrial applications.

Overview:
The EHS Manager reports directly to the Plant Manager, but also works with the Corporate EHS team. This position is responsible for the implementation and management of corporate environmental, health, and safety programs, as well as, developing, training and recommending specific environmental health and safety related programs and activities, while following corporate and government regulations and guidelines.
The primary responsibilities of the EHS Manager will be implementation, administration, training and enforcement of the plant-wide safety, health, and environmental programs. They will also be responsible for keeping abreast of any new EHS developments through attending courses and maintaining contact with other EHS professionals and regulatory agencies as well as promoting personal development and awareness of EHS issues and concerns in all plant personnel. Maintain a consistent presence out in the plant accomplishing heightened vigilance and awareness with plant activities.
Effective and organized record-keeping of all personnel training files, prepare and submit MSHA reports, ensure contractor compliance with USS requirements, prepare and submit state regulatory reports, ensure compliance with all relevant permit parameters and requirements.
This position works with a minimal amount of supervision and works approximately 60 percent of the time out in the plant environment. The EHS Manager will work closely with all levels of the plant and corporate organizations and will need to work before internal and external groups. This position requires some travel and a flexible work schedule. It is very important that he/she is able to respond effectively to emergency situations. This position is a very important component of the overall plant succession planning strategy. Once fully trained in essential job duties/functions, the EHS Manager will be cross trained with the other site managers and superintendents. The expectation is that the incumbent will be a competent and capable backfill to the other positions in a reasonable amount of time.
Job Functions:
- Implementation, administration, and enforcement of plant-wide safety, health, and environmental programs
- Champion the training program, including annual refresher training
- Keep abreast of new EHS developments through attending courses and maintaining contact with other EHS professionals and regulatory agencies
- Promote personal development and awareness of EHS issues and concerns in all plant personnel
- Be out in the plant monitoring and addressing safety activities/concerns
- Develop a strong and reputable relationship with both hourly and management employees
- Assist, train and educate plant management and employees to develop, maintain, and ensure cooperation and understanding of good environmental, safety, and health practices
- Industrial Hygiene Sampling
- Lead EHS Committee
- Investigate Incidents and enter in Industry Safe system
Requirements:
- Organization – Needs to address projects in a logical manner and be methodical in approaching issues that are complex; Pose the ability to handle several different projects or requests with a plan and structure while keeping them as individual requirements
- Communication – Needs to demonstrate good verbal skills and be able to speak to all levels of the plant organization; Ability to write clear and concise reports and documents with logical and understandable language that speaks to the message that the writer is trying to deliver
- Cooperation – Have the ability to work well with all levels of employees in the organization and be flexible when decisions are made contrary to personal views.
- Problem Analysis & Creativity – Need to be able to identify EHS problems, secure relevant information, identify possible causes, and suggest possible solutions; will need to have the ability to develop new and unique approaches to existing or traditional situations
- Knowledge
- EHS Regulations and Policies – Knowledge of company policies and government regulations pertaining to EHS issues
- Training Programs – Familiarity with the types of materials and instruction that is available to support EHS programs
- Industry Requirements – Knowledge of the plant processes, equipment, positions, and generally accepted industrial practices
- MSHA standards, rules, regulations, practices and interfacing/conducting plant inspections with MSHA inspectors
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:
- Bachelor's Degree
- EHS experience
- Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) experience required
- Knowledge of standards, regulations and permits
- Past plant experience is helpful, but not required
- Manufacturing, heavy manufacturing experience helpful
- Great safety record, environmental, title IV
- Management experience preferred, this person would have one direct report
