Reports to the Manager/Director of Radiology. Performs computerized tomography (CT) scans and X-Ray procedures that require independent judgment at a high degree of precision and skill. Follows physician's orders, protocols and procedures as directed by the radiologist and/or supervising technologist while adhering to department policies.

Imaging Technical Skills:
  • Perform CT and X-Ray procedures/examinations according to physician order's, department policies, and department protocol.
  • Evaluates imaging for technical quality and adjusts as necessary to ensure accurate diagnosis.
  • Performs any post processing required and requested by radiologist.
  • Exhibits skilled positioning techniques when needed in unusual situations such as, trauma or immobile patients, to ensure the most diagnostic images possible.
  • Consult with the Radiologist to ensure the best and most appropriate protocol is being used.
  • Selects technical factors to optimize image quality.
  • Uses primary and secondary markers to properly mark images.
  • Obtains accurate patient history to ensure patient safety and proper imaging.
  • Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and exam room.
  • Able to load protocols and adjust technical factors on power injector.
  • Recognizes pathology and adjusts imaging as necessary.
  • Explain procedure to patient, include family if necessary.
  • Performing IV injection for contrast media administration; obtaining appropriate allergy history, assessing patient condition, and reporting to the radiology nurse or radiologist as needed; performing CPR and other supportive emergency procedures.
  • Performing equipment boot up and shut-down functions, reporting malfunctions of equipment per department procedures, and maintain equipment accessories in a clean and orderly manner.
Image Management and Record Keeping:
  • Verify all written orders prior to beginning the procedure and ensure they are scanned in patient's chart.
  • Enters accurate patient exam charges to ensure correct patient charging (credit, cancel, revise, add, etc).
  • Results procedural information into the RIS in a timely manner.
  • Ensures images are in proper file in PACS.
  • Notifies appropriate person when corrections on PACS need to be made with images/files.
  • Fix any issues with patient files in which the PACS help team is not needed (QA, Merge exam, Merge Patient, Linking exams).
  • Request previous imaging and reports from facilities other than Beacon Health System.
  • Scan all pertinent documents into patient file on PACS.
  • Send images to vendors for post processing or after-hours results.
  • Communicate and provide pertinent information to ordering and referring physicians regarding patient care.
  • Assumes responsibility for schedule management and patient flow.
  • Identify patients with contrast allergy and/or decreased kidney function requiring pre-medication or hydration protocols to be utilized.
Other Department Responsibilities:
  • Orients and trains new staff.
  • Assists students in their clinical education.
  • Participates in on-call coverage on a rotational basis.
  • Responsible for wearing radiation badge and turning them in at the end of the wear period.
  • Keeps room adequately stocked with linen and supplies.
  • Assess the need for ordering new supplies.
  • Examine all supplies for any expired items and removing them from exam area.
  • Follows hospital radiation safety regulations and the principle of ALARA.
  • Utilizes email appropriately to receive communication as well as communicate to others.
  • Accurately badges daily clock in/out, PTO, holidays, or call.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Manager.
  • Perform other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department specific education within establishment timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains licenses/certificates and registrations in good standing throughout the fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by the position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process, and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working extra or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience:
  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated are normally acquired through the successful completion of an associate degree or Professional Training. ARRT or ARRT eligible, Indiana State License, and CPR certification required. A minimum of one to two years of job-related experience is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Must possess excellent imaging skills regarding positioning, technique, film critique and department protocols.
  • Must have computer knowledge of all systems used within the modalities worked.
  • Familiarity with the imaging equipment in the modalities worked.
  • Extensive knowledge of a functioning radiology department.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection and understand/utilize the methods to protect patients, self, and staff.
  • Demonstrates well-developed communication skills to understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Must pass ARRT and advanced certification in both modalities within 1 year of hire to maintain this position.
Working Conditions:
  • Employees must be available to work occasional mandatory overtime as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to take call and arrive within 30 minutes of being called in.
  • Must commit to the weekend alternative schedule based on Beacon Policy.
Physical Demands:
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
