Brief DescriptionMAIN FUNCTION:The Registered Nurse is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group ofpatients for a designated timeframe and provides care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursingprocess, the environment/instrumentation, and other health care team members. The Registered Nurse isexpected to perform their duties according to established standards of care and the core values established bythe Division of Nursing. Reports to assigned Unit Director.Duties And ResponsibilitiesSTANDARDS OF CARENursing Process Assessment 1. Performs assessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing onphysiologic, psychological and cognitive status of patients.Diagnosis 2. Analyzes assessment data to determine appropriate nursing diagnoses.Outcome Identification 3 Identifies appropriate expected outcomes individualized to the patient.Planning 4. Formulates a goal directed plan of care, which is prioritized and based on determined nursingdiagnosis and patient outcomes. 5. Identifies patient/significant other learning needs and implements appropriate measures to meetthese.Implementation 6. Implements care in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent and continuous manner. 7. Performs documentation duties on unit and in patient record, which is timely, accurate andconcise.Evaluation 8. Evaluates effectiveness of self, care given by all health care team members, and contribution ofsystems, environment, and instrumentation in progressing patient toward outcomesPROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCEQuality of Care 9. Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the institution. 10. Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, remainingcalm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. 11. Demonstrates sound knowledge base and actions in the care and decision making for designatedpatient populations. 12. Follows all Medical Center, Division of Nursing and Unit specific Policy and Procedures. 13. Consistently incorporates hourly rounding into daily practice.Performance Appraisal 14. Demonstrates an awareness of self responsibility and accountability for own professionalpractices. 15. Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit function and strivesto manage situations in a reduced risk manner.Education 16. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and skills required by assigned unit. 17. Participates actively in staff development activities for unit and department of nursing personneland other departments and personnel as appropriate.Collegiality 18. Formulates and uses effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients,and significant others. 19. Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts.Ethics 20. Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient/significant other rights, as identified within theinstitution. 21. Decisions and actions on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner.Research 22. Remains aware of current nursing research and implements findings in Nursing Practice asapplicable.Resource Utilization 23. Demonstrates self directed learning and participation in continuing education to meet ownprofessional development. Attends 75% of all staff meetings and 100% of all mandatory inservices. 33. Seeks validation of knowledge base, skill level, and decision making as necessary and assertivelyseeks guidance in areas of question.Participation in Decision Making 34. Participates in development and attainment of unit and Department of Nursing goals, along withMedical Center strategic plans and goals. 35. Participates in unit, Division of Nursing and Medical Center councils/committees as appropriate.Quality Improvement 36. Participates in Quality Improvement initiatives and standards development. 37. Is familiar with and demonstrates Quality in Action principles and participates in the process asappropriate.AGE-APPROPRIATE CARE 38. Provides age-appropriate care to all patients according to their age groups for the particular unitto which the individual is assigned.Other Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of thecustomer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to thecustomer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintaincommunication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with theMedical Center. Excellent communication skills and writing ability.Physical DemandsAppreciable physical effort required; lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving patients of various size, capabilitiesand abilities.
