Job Title: Software Engineer IV – Data Collection and Engineering

Duration: 12 months

Location: Redmond, WA

Summary:

  • Reality Labs Research brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of virtual and augmented reality, which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today.
  • In particular, the Reality Labs Research Audio team is focused on two goals; creating virtual sounds that are perceptually indistinguishable from reality, and redefining human hearing. These two initiatives will allow us to connect people by allowing them to feel together despite being physically apart and allow them to converse in even the most difficult listening environments.
  • We are looking for a contract software engineer to maintain and expand the software and systems in our data collection lab in Redmond, WA, to ensure that the data collection process is efficient, accurate and reliable. You will build software for working with cutting-edge prototype devices and integrating them into our data collection platform.
  • You will work with a team of audio/video engineers and recording technicians, as well as an international team of software engineers and interdisciplinary audio researchers. You will be expected to work with them to scope and prioritise tasks, and to collaboratively produce high-quality, maintainable software.

Top 3 must-have HARD skills:

  • Building and maintaining systems for monitoring system health.
  • Enhancing tooling for the validation and processing of data.
  • Working onsite to debug problems and performing root cause analyses.
  • Working with other engineers to triage and estimate issues.
  • Promoting best practices across the community of engineers and researchers.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • BS Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3+ years of professional programming experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working with large projects in Python.
  • Proficiency in Linux and shell scripting.
  • Skills in maintaining and improving networks.
  • Experience with cross-platform distributed (RESTful) systems.

  • Working knowledge of React, or similar frontend frameworks in JavaScript.
  • Experience with systems administration on Windows.

Story Behind the Need:

  • We are quickly expanding the Pardon data collection platform physically (number of rooms, new site in the UK), and in the complexity (number of machines, collection modes), and to support reliable and scalable data collections. We need to do this quickly while minimising disruption to ongoing operations.

Compelling story:

  • Working with a highly interdisciplinary team on a complex, multimodal system with cutting-edge devices.

Typical Day in the Role:

  • Integrating new prototype devices into the data collection platform.
