Job Summary
The Powder Paint System Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining automated or manual powder coating systems to ensure the application of high-quality finishes on products or components. This role requires attention to detail, adherence to safety standards, and a commitment to achieving production goals while maintaining quality and efficiency.
You will be reporting to the Production Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Operation:
- Operate powder coating equipment, including spray guns, booths, curing ovens, and conveyor systems.
- Monitor and adjust equipment settings to ensure uniform and consistent coating applications.
- Perform start-up, shut down, and emergency stops for the automatic and manual guns system.
- Manage automatic mode operations, calibrate systems, and select/modify recipes for different parts.
- Preparation:
- Prepare parts for painting by cleaning, masking, and hanging components on racks or conveyor systems.
- Inspect parts for defects or irregularities prior to coating.
- Understand production schedules, access ERP systems for drawings and work instructions, and manage powder inventory.
- Supply powder for upcoming orders and check the quality of reclaim powder.
- Understand electrostatic settings (air, current, voltage) and their impact on powder coating quality.
- Powder Coating Application:
- Understand different powder types and adjust gun settings accordingly.
- Apply powder coatings evenly to achieve desired finish specifications, including thickness, texture, and color.
- Ensure compliance with customer and quality standards for appearance and durability.
- Master settings for various coating profiles, including surface parts and recoats.
- Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Identify and solve issues with automatic and manual guns.
- Disassemble and assemble manual and automatic guns, set air volume and pressure, and select appropriate nozzle types.
- Perform routine maintenance on powder coating equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Perform cleaning tasks and pre-cure mill thickness checks.
- Identify and troubleshoot issues with equipment or processes to minimize downtime.
- Quality Control:
- Inspect finished products to verify they meet quality standards.
- Address coating defects, such as uneven application or contamination, promptly.
- Adjust electrostatic settings for better transfer efficiency and coating quality.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Handle and dispose of powder coatings and related materials in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain records of production runs, material usage, and equipment maintenance.
- Communicate with supervisors and team members regarding progress, issues, or process improvements.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to noise, heat, and powder coating materials.
- Must adhere to strict safety protocols and procedures.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in powder coating or a related field preferred.
- Knowledge of powder coating systems, materials, and techniques.
- Ability to interpret work orders, technical specifications, and safety guidelines.
- Strong attention to detail and quality-focused mindset.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects, and work in a manufacturing environment.
