Job Summary:
The Water Quality Laboratory Technician, under the supervision of the Regional Water Reclamation Facility Laboratory Supervisor, performs laboratory tests on wastewater, sludge, and related substances to ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards. This non-exempt position requires technical expertise in operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, conducting analyses, and ensuring accurate and precise data collection. The role contributes to the safe and effective operation of the Regional Water Reclamation Facility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct chemical and other analyses on wastewater, sludge, and related substances to determine identity, properties, and composition.
- Operate standard and specialized laboratory equipment; record measurements and test results accurately.
- Calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment and portable sampling devices.
- Prepare analytical reagents, standards, and solutions for testing processes.
- Generate, calculate, and record data from laboratory analyses; maintain detailed records in both written and digital formats.
- Perform mathematical calculations based on raw data and ensure quality control in laboratory testing.
- Maintain laboratory glassware, sample bottles, and ensure cleanliness and organization of the laboratory environment.
- Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean and hazard-free laboratory.
- Recognize and report test values outside established parameters.
- Assist with the upkeep of laboratory facilities and equipment.
Skills and Competencies:
- Knowledge of laboratory practices, methods, and equipment used in the analysis of environmental substances.
- Understanding of proper laboratory procedures, quality control standards, and safety regulations.
- Proficiency in mathematical calculations and data analysis for laboratory testing.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recording and reporting data.
- Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and work independently.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to handle hazardous chemicals safely and follow safety protocols.
- Proficiency in using computers for data entry and record-keeping.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Must possess a Highschool diploma or GED. Associate’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field required.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferred.
- Equivalent experience working in a laboratory environment at a wastewater management facility will be considered.
Experience:
- Minimum of two years conducting laboratory analyses or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Other Requirements:
- Residency within 20 air-miles of City of Clinton and RWRF facility.
- Non-user of tobacco products and compliance with the Smoke-Free Air Act.
- Valid Iowa driver’s license in good standing.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach, talk, hear, and smell.
- Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work is performed in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals and substances requiring adherence to safety protocols.
